Please help me find a nice coat for dd (6)

Needs to be waterproof and warm and under £40 if possible.

I can't (yet) find anything that's isn't shiny material (yuk) or too thin. I'm shocked at Next' s coat collection this year as usually get her one from there but they are awful!

I think I might be struggling because she's just 'graduated' from younger girls ranges to older girls and everything seems too old for her Hmm

Any suggestions gratefully received..

John Lewis, Boden or Lands End. Everywhere else is shiney crap. Next is always horrid for coats

itsnothingoriginal · 21/08/2013 13:16

I've just been looking at those sites - some nice coats but mostly out of my budget. Please tell me I don't need to spend over £50 on a decent coat for her or am I just kidding myself Shock

My DD (6) covets this one from Joules www.joules.com/Girls/Jackets-Coats/Jnr-Kirstie/Girls-Hooded-Rain-Coat/Navy-Pony-Print?id=P_JNRKIRSTIE|NAVPONY

NigelMolesworth · 21/08/2013 13:22

Sorry that was supposed to come out as a link! It's a navy pony print Kirstie jacket. We had one last year similar style different pattern and it was lovely. Still looks great this year much to DD's disappointment!

itsnothingoriginal · 21/08/2013 13:42

That's lovely Nigel - is it warm too? Has to be really warm for dd as she has difficulty regulating her temperature especially in cold weather.

I considered this for dd. she rejected it of course. It looks nicer in real life, but was very thick

carrie74 · 21/08/2013 13:56

It might be a bit early still for properly warm coats. I just bought the "fun" Mac from Boden for my 8YO, but that's not to last her all winter - just for autumn/spring.

We've had success from H&M and Gap padded coats in the past, and my son has a great Boden padded coat that we bought a few years ago in the sale. This will be his second winter wearing it (I think - need to check back on photos!).

OldRoan · 21/08/2013 13:58

Surprisingly (I was surprised, anyway), Blacks have got some quite nice children's coats, and they should be pretty warm. I love this spotted mac but I suppose it might be a bit thin?

MortifiedAdams · 21/08/2013 14:02

wax jacket

itsnothingoriginal · 21/08/2013 14:24

Thanks - some definite possibilities there Smile Love the spotty mac especially - might take a trip to Blacks to see how warm it is. I think there's a Matalan and H&M near work so will try there too..

isnothing, never buy Boden full price. There is always a code floating around or sometimes a flash sale with 20-25% off. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/promotional_codesbargains/1699243-BoDen-codes-that-actually-works-please?
MCES appears to be working today and will get you 20% off.

NigelMolesworth · 21/08/2013 20:27

The Joules jacket that DD has is padded in the body but not in the sleeves. Personally I would need a warmer coat in the winter but DD has never complained of being cold. The other coats that I have looked at are Lands End kids coats. I bought one in the sale last year and thought it looked excellent. I only sent it back because it fitted last year but I wanted it for this winter (iyswim).

NigelMolesworth · 21/08/2013 20:30

Incidentally, if you do look at Lands End, look in the Outlet section where they have outdoor girls coats at half price in last years colours. The one we tried last year was the purple squall jacket and its £25 now.

UseHerName · 21/08/2013 20:31

i thought this too about next coats this year

CheckpointCharlie · 21/08/2013 20:35

John Lewis did a lovely long one for £25, it was pink and puffy and very warm.

MissWimpyDimple · 21/08/2013 20:42

The next coats this year are revolting Blush anything with a colour named "rust" or "mink" makes me shudder!

Gap are excellent for really warm winter coats as are Pumpkin Patch. I always look for a down filled one if I can.

UseHerName · 21/08/2013 20:54

i'm looking on ebay for good conditions favourites from previous seasons

This for example:

www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Next-7-8-girls-winter-school-coat-padded-navy-/321190694354?pt=UK_Kids_Coats_Jackets&hash=item4ac8750dd2

something that i know fits and is warm etc

TheWoollybacksWife · 21/08/2013 20:56

I bought this Trespass jacket for my 6 year old DS in blue. It has a zip out fleece jacket and is warm, waterproof and bum covering.

UseHerName · 21/08/2013 21:01

oh woolys - we have a trespass/regatta coat like that every year, and they're brilliant, but i don't find them warm enough for the really bitterly cold winters we've had - especially if you've to walk as opposed to drive...

TheWoollybacksWife · 21/08/2013 21:09

We should be all right - we have to use the car for the school run - but thanks for the heads up.

justanuthermanicmumsday · 21/08/2013 21:10

I use next for kids clothes I don't have Time to shop in different stores and I get so stressed I can't do it.but I had the same problem as you last year no coats that were practical in next all fashion but not so good on waterproof side,or machine wash. Daughter was 6 and other one was 2. I also I didn't want to spend more than 40 . French catalogue verbadeut or la redoute they're partners go up a size I've noticed every reviewer saying that definitely needs to be bigger otherwise its too much of a perfect fit and won't last. They'll be using the same coats this winter I think next year they'll need new ones. I also use them for knitwear and polo necks in winter for kids always have offers on next is getting too expensive as kids are growing 20 quid for kids jumped madness for me I can't afford more than two at that cost.

UseHerName · 21/08/2013 21:11

oh that's good then Grin brilliant wee coat

justanuthermanicmumsday · 21/08/2013 21:11

*jumper

CruCru · 21/08/2013 22:23

Muddy Puddles are having quite a good sale - may be worth looking on their website. Not sure what ages the coats all go to though.

itsnothingoriginal · 21/08/2013 23:06

Have ordered padded one from Boden website - thanks for tip off about 20% code mamijacacalys!

Thanks all Smile
