How can I get a grease stain off a leather bag?

DH bought me a gorgeous new surprise bag at the weekend and I've managed to get a grease stain (or rather, DS and his mucky fingers have!) on the handle already :(

How can I get it off, does anyone know? It's a pale tan colour which I think is why it shows up so much and the grease is from pizza if that helps!

I wondered if a dot of washing up liquid on it would work? I have googled but I wanted a tried and tested method really...

talcum powder? it's better to absorb the grease rather than wash it out, iyswim.

Thank you MoottonBun, talc is a good idea, I'll see if we have some to try :)

Try dusting it with Fullers earth. It is a tan/brown fine powder and you can get it from any chemist.

Thanks very much, I'll give it a try :)

Also try a basic furniture polish like Mr Sheen (spray a small amount onto a duster first then apply to bag). This is what the staff in Mulberry used when I bought a bag for DH a few years ago which had some marks on it - worked amazingly!

This stuff is very good and literally sucks great out of things.

Thanks very much everyone :) I've not got anywhere with the talc and haven't been able to find Fullers Earth anywhere in town for some reason! Mycat, I'm not sure if the polish will work as the grease is quite embedded if you know what I mean? I used it on a black mark on the underside of the bag though and it worked a treat so thank you!

Tethers, that looks like just the stuff I need to break the grease down. I'll have a look if I can find some in town later, if not I'll order it. Thanks!

Maybe you need to grease the rest of the bag to match!

MrsMeow · 25/08/2013 06:42

Haha! Maybe that's the way to go Grin

We used the following method to get a massive chocolate grease stain out of our leather sofa: fill up a hot water bottle. Wrap in a teatowel and leave on top of the grease stain with a layer of kitchen towel in between. Keep repeating (we did it three times and let the water bottle get xold each time) and the heat breaksdown the grease. It works well but it fasdes gradually rather than all at once so stick with it!

Thank you mewkins! I'll give it a go...must find my hot water bottle!
