DIY blonde for the very fussy - possible?!

I used to dye my mousey / blonde hair platinum a while ago (about fifteen years) but got sick of the constant upkeep at the hairdressers eventually and so went red, then back to natural with highlights. I now have no colour in at all and am very bored with it. I can afford neither the time or the money for constant trips to the hairdressers (I can't bear roots!) but am toying with the idea of doing it myself.

Does anyone do theirs themselves and, if so, what brand do you use? Am considering the Nice and Easy range as they claim to add tones and highlights but I am confused as to how this would be possible with a block colour (my last foray into doing my own all over blonde was close on 20 years ago so appreciate things may have moved on since then!)

I used to do my own highlights using a streaking kit. Nice n Easy, I think. About a fiver. I would not colour my hair all over as it goes orange.

Not convinced by the claims of the tones and highlights kits.

Ps am not going to go as fair as I used to, more like several shades lighter than I currently am

I'm not convinced either but, as I said, I may be out of touch! My DH attempted a home highlights kit

Bloody phone!

Yes, DH attempted highlights for me with one of those kits but he did them so delicately that they weren't noticeable

I think the trouble with those kits is the caps. They make it difficult to pull hair through consistently, and don't sit tightly on the scalp. I sometimes used to sort of paint mine on, with I interesting results! My hair is short, and grows quickly, so it does't really matter. I'd love to get hold of one of those rubbery professional caps. I think we could do a good job then!

Don't do it. You will either go orange if the dye isn't strong enough, or it will ruin the condition of your hair permanently if it is.

I would say no - sorry! (Especially if fussy.)

MrsDoomsPatterson · 20/08/2013 22:22

Please don't ! From one fussy blonde to another. Aveda at a salon is the only way...(for me anyway) - My friend writes hairdressing books & when I said I might do my own she really advised me not to!

DIY blonde is completely achievable at home if you're thinking of doing an all over colour. Highlights are trickier to get right. I'm naturally brunette and a DIY ash blonde, using bleach and a colourant on top. I use Nice and Easy and would recommend them, and yes their dyes do seem to add tones and highlights though I've no idea how. In fairness my hair probably already has some differing subtle tones from not bleaching entirely evenly. If you're already a natural mousey blonde then it should be a piece of pee to do your hair yourself (and I doubt you'd go orange with that base colour but a toner would fix it if you did) but if you really despise roots that much then may be best to remain au naturel?

I second nice and easy , easy to use and adds high/low lights as well.
Dont be fooled into buying the foam version as it wrecked the condition of my hair.

Yesterday I took the plunge and did a home highlight kit with cap for the first time. I am absolutely delighted with it. My hair is mouse, the hairdresser says it's a 7 if that's similar to you? I already had 3 inches of root with highlights at the ends.

It took hours to pull all the bits through and was tangly when the cap came off but I slathered on deep conditioner afterwards and the condition is better than the salon highlights I've been paying a fortune for.

I used L'oreal perfect blonde kit and I've got light golden highlights after 20 mins, the minimum development time. I've seen the Scott Cornwall file effect cap recommended on a few sites. I might try that next time as the cap supplied was quite big on my head.

That should read FOIL effect cap!
