Curly hair - what are my options?

I have curly hair, but which tends to frizz.

What can I do to promote curls without frizz? I'd like them to be not too ringlet-y but not looking damp/crispy either?

I have started to use the Moroccan oil curl cream, I find it holds the curl the way it is when it is semi dry iykwim, which is so much nicer than the frizz I get when it gets fully dry. It is expensive though, and I do end up washing my hair every day when using it as opposed to every 2nd.

I don't use anything with silicone or sulphates and have seen a big improvement in my hair. I use organic 100% argan oil rather than oils packed with silicone. I also use the Babyliss Big Hair Styler which controls the frizz. Unfortunately, I can't leave my hair to dry naturally.

I second the curly girl method which is no sulphates etc.

I've been doing it for 6 months now and my hair is great. My mum even commented that my hair looks different.

there's a web site dedicated to curly hair products. It is called curlyemporium.co.uk

Personally, my favourite product is Kerastase oleo curl. I buy the shampoo, mask and curling cream online. My hairdresser recommended them about 3 years ago and they are great for my hair. I just wash, condition with the mask and put a small amount of the cream on towel wet hair. I let it dry naturally and it doesn't frizz.

On the second day, if I want to revive the curl, I just use the conditioning mask and the cream. No shampoo.

Boots Curl Creme works well for me. My budget does no stretch to Keratase any more.

ShutTheFuckUpBarbara · 19/08/2013 10:49

I use John Frieda products, and do overnight oil masks as well.

Tried going no sulphate/silicone but I ended up with fluffy, cloud-like hair. Prob depends on your hair type for this one, but it certainly didn't do anything for me!

Weekly coconut oil mask works wonders for me - shovel on loads of pure coconut oil onto dry hair, work through, pay particular attention to the ends. Leave on for as long as poss, I usually manage 1-2 hours. Wet hair and shampoo out. I use Tresemme Naturals conditioner (no silicone) as a leave-in to soaking wet hair, Boots Curl Creme (pink stuff) on top, then a bit of Boots Gel (purple stuff). Wrap hair in towel for 10-15 minutes, then unwrap, arrange into place and leave to air dry for 10 hours approx Smile

I've just discovered the bumble and bumble curl conscious range. Really, really loving it at the moment. Larger Boots stock it or you can get it on line. I too tried the cg method and ended up with a head of fuzz. Guess it doesn't work for everyone

GlassesDontSuitMe · 20/08/2013 10:35

As no two curly heads are the same it's trial and error really.

I do the Curly Girl method but wash my hair every month because I dye it.

I have just bought Naked leave in conditioner and Naked Divine Curls serum. I got them both from Boots but they're not on the website so can't link. They are fantastic. Along with This not a frizzy hair in sight.

If you don't like the crispy/wet look scrunching with a drop of oil usually gets rid of it.

I found using Tony and Guy leave in conditioner made a big difference to my hair. Also using a diffuser to dry it but not drying it completely iyswim

Grrr! Posted thanks to an inquisitive toddler! Grin

Anyway, lots of different advice!

I'll have a look at the curly girl stuff I think - John Frieda used to work for me, but after having DS my hair texture changed and everything looks crispy, not wavy so will see what happens. Almost finished my bottle of shampoo so will hunt out an SLS free variety.

Thanks all!

I use foxy curls by Tigi. I use it straight from the shower and rub it between my palms with a little water before scrunching it through. I find that means it doesn't go crispy, just twirly soft curls.

SteppingOnLego · 20/08/2013 19:01

I also try to avoid SLS/silicone. Used to use frizz ease pre kids but it seemed to stop working. Now just use cheap conditioner to 'wash' with occasional actual shampoo. Then leave in MOP conditioner and boots pink curl cream put on while still dripping wet. This is based on curly girl method but then I just leave it to dry and sometimes finish off with diffuser if in a hurry. My curls have never been better.

I have tried the boots naked products but didn't like them. Gave me very fluffy hair. That is the leave in conditioner and curl cream, the wash out conditioner was ok but nothing special.

It is so important to use the right products...I too have frizzy hair. You must keep it moisturized. Also, if you blow dry, keep the heat on low, and finish with cool hair to set the curl.

I don't have curly hair but curl with ceramic wand and it will last about 3 days if I use the Aussie curl definition + soft feel serum! Just rub in hands and run through hair, really smooths curls and makes soft x

Jojopumpkinmama · 14/10/2013 19:54

Yes, Kerastase shampoo for me, too. And Charles Worthington Moisture Seal leave in conditioner before getting out of the shower and wrapping my hair in a towel. It's genius stuff and I go through tonnes of it, but definitely helps with the frizz for me.
