I have the Merrell Ellenwood, it's lovely. I also have a north face one. They are both very very waterproof and very warm.

I just bought a barbour arctic down parka half price (so £150 which would be just on budget for OP) - it's incredibly warm but not waterproof. I bought it from a boutique based in Sheffield and they still have quite a few half price Barbours on their website

I LOVE my Merrell coat. Quite possibly the best coat I've ever had. Think it was called Haven II. Water resistant, warm (like wearing a duvet), goes with skirt or jeans, so I can feel toasty without looking frumpy. Love it love it love it!! Shame DH wouldn't let me buy another one in a different colour

Veronica arrived today and lovely! I went for black and it has a nice sage coloured lining and the hood is lined too so will be warm. Hood is also quite substantial so unlikely to blow off. There's a nice knitted cuff detail in sage and loads of pockets including a phone pocket with a hole for headphones which I thought was a nice detail. Has a slight fishtail detail at back so bum defo covered! Very light in weight with internal padding but I was told should do to about -5.
Sizing is good for me. I went for a 40 and I would say it's a large 12. The only thing I would comment on is that the arms are very long. This is great as I have long arms and jackets don't normally fit in arm. However I think some may find the arms too long. The front goes to mid thigh on me, I'm 5ft8 and back of coat is a couple of inches longer.
It's the smartest coat I've seen with all the waterproof features and I'm really happy with it, especially as got it for £80 not £150!

thanks for reporting back tweet, thought i'd found THE waterproof coat for me, but maybe not... fed up of buying clothes with long arms that i then have to fold back as if i was a school kid whose parent has bought a size to 'grow into' !!

I really like some of the Barbour items linked to, but am unsure re sizing. It sounds from here that sizing may be generous/ erratic and I'm thinking it might be better to at least try on some jackets before ordering!

I searched everywhere last year for a waterproof warm long coat.
I tried the merrell, the duffle style was blurgh and the other one, think its haven was too stiff and box like. Plus I need my wrists o feel warm and there's no adjustable cuffs on them.

I tried the boden rainy day but cuffs again were a problem and its only showerproof so I got soaked.

I bought it in navy last year and it is lovely. Completely waterproof and warm with light padding. It comes up slightly small if you want to wear thick jumpers.
I also bought a landsend down coat. This was really warm and comfy. It was also water repellant. Not ideal for walking in torrential rain but fine to and from work in the rain etc.

I bought the North Star and it is very, very nice. Had to give to my MIL though as size was tiny and bought from Ebay so couldn't return. I'd recommend it.

I got this one last year and it's brilliant - Arpenaz 500 - properly 100% waterproof, a good length and warm enough that I barely bothered with my down jacket all winter. It's a nice shape too, not bulky or boxy, and I was very impresed with it for the price.

I was recently looking for exactly the same thing, also for buggy pushing and child carrying in the rain. There are a few threads here on MN about the search for a perfect rain mac, and I checked out pretty much all of the brands mentioned but didn't really like anything. I'm quite petite 5'3 and pear-shaped, so most of the Boden or Merrell type of jackets would just swallow me up and left me with no shape + short stumps of legs.

I finally found a really nice trench looking waterproof, fleece-lined black rain mac from TKMaxx. A brand called Miss Sixty which is not something I usually go for but the jacket is amazing. The belt can be tied up to accent the waist. Everything I'd ask for. Has a hood too. was £60 but retail for £150 normally.

Definitely check out TKMaxx. You might just be surprised to grab a bargain on your dream jacket

Lands end chalet is not waterproof but showerproof....but they have an everlasting guarantee which means you can return anything anytime,even after a year so worth checking out to see if it suits? i had one and it got drenched after school run and I had to change coats to go out later in the morning, not ideal, so I returned it!

I think their stadium squall is great, and it is waterproof.

By the way I am size 14-16 and 5 ft 3 with LARGE hips so I am not quite sure if the Ellenwood would look right.

Bizarrely I am kind of like the second one from Barbour but is it really a crime to be seen in one? I am not sure about the belt too. arggrrr. Just need something nice and warm but not mumsy but have a nagging feeling that all these three tick the mumsy box well.

Munashe - I suggested the Barbours. I don't think that specific one is particularly ubiquitous or criminal, despite it's name. It also doesn't have obvious branding anyway. I live in rural Yorkshire and a whole variety of people still wear Barbours here. That shop is generally aimed at the more mature and affluent lady to describe it politely. Barbours may have enjoyed notoriety but I still think they are foremost a practical outdoor make. Zara has a very close copy of the parka I bought this Winter which is £120 so very little less than I spent and the difference in quality is very very noticeable.

I have a landsend parka which I think had the word squall in the name and it's pretty bad, on me at least. I'm 5ft 10 and a size 10 and the parka in size small is hugely too wide, but also really short with too short sleeves etc. It might be better on someone with a different body shape, but for me the insurmountable flaw for anyone is that the hood is massive and it doesn't stay on properly. I have a big head and struggle to get hats to fit so it's not because of me having a pinhead! Luckily I got it on sale for £40 or so - it was an emergency purchase for a weekend away and hasn't been worn since it's so hopeless. It was very warm though!

The other coat you linked to looks like a bargain price and gets great reviews so I would choose that over the Lands End one (but personally would choose the barbour over that!).
