Is it correct that a hairdresser cannot highlight hair right to the scalp line?

I got my hair highlighted today and I was fine when I left the salon, no complaints. However when I get home from the hairdresser the first thing I do is put it up and it looks quite streaky at the side. Dh says it looks like they have missed a bit of hair as there is a space one side.

Can hairdressers not highlight it right close to the scalp? I rang the hairdresser and asked if she could put another foil in but she was a bit funny about it.

It's not balanced, when my hair is back one side looks more natural than the other. She just said it is very hard to do.

Also on another issue, I said I wanted finer than fine highlights but it looks too streaky and thick.

Am I asking the impossible?

No. I had mine redone yesterday. They go right up to the scalp and are fine. However I am in the chair for AGES as she hunts out my greys to make sure they get some colour on them.

Angry What am I doing wrong!

I said to the lady I want really, really fine highlights and there is a patch of grey at the temple that I want you to cover.

She didn't do either, the highlights are far too thick and the grey patch is still there, - thats actually the part that she left totally highlight free.

Any advice on how to make it more explicitly clear that I want fine, fine highlights not streaks?

Find a different salon/ go on one reccomended by a friend. Take pics if needed to explain what you want.

That's why the old 'cap and crochet hook' method was so much better. Closer to the scalp and much finer. I hate tin foil and easi meche highlights. It can be hit and miss/ patchy. Hairdressers must love them cos you now have to go back more often as regrowth is much more obvious because they were not close to the scalp from the start!

oh she just sounds either lazy or crap!

I agree- find a better salon. what you are asking for is entirely possible, and yes takes a bit of time but that's what you are paying for!

ImNotBloody14 · 16/08/2013 18:42

if you see someone who has the highlights you want ask them where they go to and perhaps ask if you could take a photo.

I actually brought a friend's friend to the salon she went to so I could get the exact cut she had. only works if they're someone you already know and they're willing though! Grin

Go to a better hairdresser, definitely. I find cheaper ones always seem to do thicker highlights - and leaving a whole chunk unhighlighted is just unprofessional and lazy. It takes a cheap hairdresser about 1.5 hrs to do a full head on me - most expensive place I've been - Taylor something in Shoreditch - it took over 3 hours because she was so meticulous. Plus they gave me wine and it was much finer highlights and more natural looking. My pet hate is when they don't do the little fuzzy post-pregnancy hairs around my face properly. I know it's a faff to do, but do it properly fgs!

If you're not happy, ask the salon to rectify it. You shouldn't have to pay extra, or pay again for another salon to do a better job.

so glad op asked this, I have a hairdresser that comes to my house and she's lovely but the last few times I've paid for a full head of highlights and the foils have been done in half an hour. I've also then put my hair up and had the same problem at the sides with it looking awful! I guess the question is can I somehow ask her to do it more carefully without offending her or is it time to change hairdresser, ahhh!!

gailforce1 · 17/08/2013 09:29

If you are thinking of changing hairdresser make sure you get the name of the stylist as often, even within the best/most expensive salons there will be some who are better than others. Also some stylists are much better at cutting than colouring and vice versa.

As a hairdresser I know the colour applied to the grey section should have been a different product and that's why it looks no different , in my opinion she seems inexperienced in colour
