Dear god, I don't actually own ANY sensible shoes

I'm having a major clearout of wardrobes and a general tidy round.
Have organised shoes and tried them all on. I luff them all! But, none of them are in any way sensible ShockConfused

How have I managed this?!
They're all open toes, sandles, skyscraper high.

So, I need sensible shoes. Have worn heels about twice in last two years.
Won't be throwing any but obviously need proper shoes.

Any ideas? Was thinking couple pairs boots and couple pairs flats. Where do I start?
Can't afford to spend oodles.

Ideally I'd love tall black boots, tall brown boots, black ankle boots, brown ankle boots, then a couple of pairs of flats. Do I need 4 pairs of boots? Is that daft?

What kind of flats do I need? Ballets? Pumps? Don't like brogues.
Want colours that go with lots of outfits so maybe black and navy? Animal print?

What about converse type pumps? Are they any good?

Ps I'm not a hooker. My shoes are all lovely just very high and more 'going out' or flip flop types which won't be any good if this rain continues or when autumn arrives.

"Ps I'm not a hooker" Grin I'm going to be using that on all my S&B posts from now on.

If you like animal print (some people are a bit anti) I highly recommend it, it seems to go with everything - but only on pumps. It somehow tips over into Bet Lynch on boots and shoes, but that may just be me. Clarks do several different prints in a ballet pump shape, greyish leopard, brownish leopard, snakeskin etc and are IME comfortable and give good support, unlike a lot of the £20 pumps you find in the high st which are a bit too flat.

I have a fine collection of ballet flats but if I was starting it again now I'd buy at least one slipper shape, I think. M&S was doing some great red suede ones but seem to have sold out of them immediately as they always do with anything decent Hmm

Do you like Brogues or Monk strap flat shoes as they are everywhere this season?

You can have as many pairs of shoes as you can afford. I do Grin....

Obviously black, dark grey and dark brown all go well with most things but you can find brogues with different colour accents if you want something a little brighter. I like these wine brogues and these leopard ones. here are some block heels.

Flat pumps are perennially good but maybe look for the ones with a little block heel to help keep you out of the rain puddles. Animal prints are actually incredibly versatile and go with most self/block colours. They look great with pale blues, reds, navy, black grey and brown, silvers and metallics, ochre yellows. They are often more versatile than plain old black which can look quite heavy.

Do you like the Clark Desert boot here? They are a style icon and suit most pants.

These block heel shoes will do work/lcasual or winter evening depending upon what you wear them with. I like these a lot. They will look pretty with A line, pleated or bell shaped skirts/dresses and suit all manner of pants too. They come in metallic silver or leopard too.

These are my current object of lust. The style is available from plenty of High St stores plus Net A Porter/Outnet/ASOS if you want to look online. They can be worn as a shoe, boot or shoeboot! As far as Biker Boots go these have lasted me over a decade and are not as clumpy as they look.

As far as trainers go, Converse are lovely. But these, i have my eye on too. I do not wear many trainers but like these as they would look good with quite smart pants too. Or you could go mad and source these although I bet they cost ££££££

These leopard Converse are really nice and I want them!

I have these and absolutely love them. V comfortable and look nice with jeans, 7/8ths trousers and even skirts and dresses.

I also have leopard print ballet shoes, which are v versatile.

Chelsea boots v useful too.

Twinklestein · 16/08/2013 14:17

Pumps & driving shoes are very useful and you can get ones with a cushioned sole, that are v comfortable.

As you obv like heels, I find low wedge shoes with a cushioned sole can be as comfortable as flats to walk around in. Like this

For a wide selection of boots I'd checkout Javari.co.uk, Sarenza.co.uk, Spartoo.co.uk & Zalando.co.uk as well as the usual suspects.

Mad- I read the message back and my first thought was 'hooker' but my shoes are lovely and all non hookerish Grin
The clarks pumps are lovely. Will have a good look through.

Yes I like leopard print but just on pumps.

Mig- not a fan of brogues, no idea what monk straps are? Will google. Like the idea of pumps with little heel incase of wet ground. Good idea.
Don't like desert boots. Possibly Chelsea boots? Those biker boots are lovely!

Remus- the converse in tan are lovely!

I used to have a pair of slouchy tan boots from topshop. Literally wore them to death but have not seen anything similar since.

Also, why do I only like pump style flats?! I just can't find any other flat styles I like? Weird.

What do you think?
Good starting point?

I haven't got many sensible shoes either, if it makes you feel better.

I second the biker boot recommendation. Even Jimmy Choo sell those so they must possess some inherent glamour. Also ballet pumps are useful. I walk to the station in mine then change into my impractical heels for work (I'm not a hooker either. I'm an accountant, which may be worse).

Truthfully, do not love the tan suede moccasins in your link. Good luck on your sensible shoe quest though!

alwaysrunninginheels · 17/08/2013 07:27

OP as to why you only like pump style flats- I think if your natural style it's harder to find flats that suit you. I love heels (the name might suggest so) and I see lots of people looking fab in flats, yet when I try the same shoe I look ridiculous. I own one pair of flat shoes - and they are for dog walking. Otherwise I love block heels and wedges. I love the marmite wedge trainer- hated by many I know. But just popping in to say you can still wear heels.

NoComet · 17/08/2013 08:13

monk stapped shoes

Basicly substantial shoes, boots with straps across the front rather than brogue laces.

This gives way more design possibilities, which is great for those of us banned from brogues.

DD2 wears them as school shoes, so mum can't have any, as I'd want black to wear with skirts and leggings (can't stand pumps of any kind, they kill my heels)
