My mum is 61 and is going grey- I would say she is 50/60% grey if she didn't colour it.

Recently she has become very unhappy with the way it looks as at the temples and around the hair line it basically is totally grey and she gets a 'band' which she hates. They put a dark brown and then highlight bits but the dark is too dark and is draining. It also looks unnatural.

My mum would like to achieve a salt and pepper type grey rather than grow her existing colour out - she has mid length hair.

Can anyone suggest what she needs to ask for? I hate to see my mum unhappy with her hair and I just know she finds getting older really hard. She has been such a rock to me, I really wish I could find the magic solution for her hair!

I think you need her to pop into a salon and explain everything you have said here to a colour professional.

I would suggest going lighter so the regrowth is not as noticeable, then letting it grow out to her natural colour. There is no such colour as salt and pepper in hairdressing and this would be almost impossible to achieve, plus she would still have regrowth. Letting it grow out may not seem ideal but if she is the lightest colour she can go on a shade chart it won't be as bad as being the colour she is now. I would go into a salon and ask.

Firstly I'd get her to a different hairdressers. That solid block of dark colour look on older women is awful and so aging. I agree with going a LOT lighter. Soft highlights would be lovely, look at how nice Helen Mirren looks here.

She needs her base colour to be lighter as then the regrowth won't be so noticeable. She also needs highlights through it to break up the colour and make it more natural. I am very grey too and I have a base colour plus highlights in a couple of different colours which looks more natural. I get my colour done every 4 weeks - roots only prob every second time.

Most good salons will do a consultation first.
