Home colour over bleach highlights?

What the title says basically, can I put a home colour (probably garner cherry red) over previously highlighted hair?
Can't really afford to go back to the salon atm but don't want to end up ruining my hair completely!

Yes but the bleached bits will be lighter. Because it's a red they could go pinkish.

Don't do it! Save up.

I spent many years, and a small fortune, having my brown / grey hair highlighted at a salon.
I got fed up with the up keep and one day stuck a garnier nutrisse home colour on my head. It was fine. It covered the highlights though after a few washes the highlighted hair looked a little lighter but I think this made it look more natural anyway. I will definitely be sticking with the home colouring for the time being!

Same here scarlet. I get complimented on my hair everytime i colour it too. Apart from one colleague who knows I do it myself and repeatedly says 'you can always tell if someone colours their own hair because it's just one flat colour'- that's because she's just bitchy about everything though, it's nonsense and I just laugh at her Grin

Do it, it'll be fine. Although I might be cautious about using anything with red tones.

Same as scarlet76. I stuck to my natural shade to blend my roots, though. Like someone said above, with cherry red the blonde might go pink!

Thanks for the replies Smile would I be better off with a brown colour then? (My natural colour is a medium brown)

I would put a lightest brown in to begin with. The bleached bits will still be a bit lighter but thats what I do to get highlights in brown hair. You could put the red over the brown to stop the pink tinge.

Thank you Grin

I did this recently and put a rich brown over first then waited a couple of weeks and put the colour on I wanted. My hair is naturally ash brown but if there is any red pigment in a hair colour it comes out really red and generally always goes darker than on the box. I asked a hairdresser before I did it though as I was scared the highlights would go green and she said to go red before brown so I imagine red would be fine. Though the cherry over the highlights may be more pink. So maybe an auburn or mahogany first might be a good idea

My natural hair colour is mid / dark brown but as I say lots of greys now. I used a light brown shade. When I first did everybody assumed it was a salon job. In fact the only person who said the colour was a bit flat was my hairdresser who had been taking £80 a time off me!!

I get mine highlighted about twice a year then top up inbetween with a home colour, looks great, I use Perfect 10 which is easy and only takes 10 mins. I think the highlights stop it looking too flat.
