basically my hair is gross...it's been over 6 months since i had it cut and my ends are now disgusting. i really cant afford to spend £25 on a cut this month so I have been looking at the technique where you put a ponytail on your forehead then snip away but im really scared!!!
Have any of you done this and been happy with it? i only want to take a couple of inches off, nothing drastic.

P.S my hair is bra strap length, if that makes a difference?

I've never cut my own hair but I've cut other peoples hair. I'm alright unless it's curly and then I won't touch it as there's too much room for error with curls. I've been considering cutting my own though as I too can't afford a haircut right now but my hairs already not that long and I don't want to take much off. If you decide to brave it, report back!!

Yes I did mine, was fine :)

Yep, been cutting it myself for 11 years. No training but I'm very enthusiastic! I do that haircut on my DDs when their hair is long.

I always cut my own hair (have for last ten years at least) because I always ended up very upset by hairdressers. I use the method (which sounds v similar to the one you describe) I read about described by the net a porter founder, where you stick your head upside down and then cut a straight line across to give you layers. Then I trim the bottom and the fringe.
Then I tidy the whole thing up with little snips here and there. My hair is thick, unruly and frizzy/curly. I wash and blow dry every other day. Not sure I'd texture of hair is relevant to e success of this hair cut.
Good luck!

I cut the layers round my face by eye, it's fine as a top-up. Last had a proper haircut in May and am probably due another now.

I'm surprised to hear OneLittleLady say it's more difficult with curls though, my curls are the only reason I feel I can get away with it! I think mistakes show up more on straight hair.

I always cut my own hair but I don't use the ponytail method. I just cut it all to one length all around and then shape the front so that it frames my face from about chin length (pic on my profile). I just section off my hair when it's wet, pull sections down straight between my fingers and cut off however much I want to. I've learnt over the years that hair is actually pretty forgiving and you can always even things up once it's dry!

There are loads of youtube videos of people cutting their own hair - watch a few, they'll give you lots of confidence as you watch them happily cutting away!! :)

Knickknack, you look like a young Julianne Moore! Your hair is gorgeous.

I cut my hair sometimes. I use these

www.creaclip.co.uk/. You cannot go wrong. I paid a tenner for mine as you can buy on ebay, amazon and other sites.

OneLittleLady · 13/08/2013 19:51

MadBusLady it might just be me with the cutting curls thing, I just can't do it without someone ending up with lopsided hair!

ShabbyButNotChic · 13/08/2013 22:18

Well.......ive done it! Dp encouraged bullied me. I waffled on about doing it but being scared, so he brought me a bobble and scissors and went 'will you just do it!' And........it turned out great!!! Im so happy :) looks like a proper cut with layers and everything! I did the ponytail method and it was easy :)

Ps knitknack your hair is beautiful! Is that your natural colour?!

Yay - well done! You'll get more adventurous as time goes on and soon wonder why you ever worried about it! :)

Thanks for the compliments Blush you're both very lovely. Yes, it's my natural colour. I'm getting a few greys now though (am 40) at my temples.... the next era of hair concerns awaits!! (I'm going to investigate cassia and henna when the time comes, I think).

I used to cut mine and everything was fine, until one day I accidentally went a bit short... and it looked horrendous. Coupled with a bad colour job, I needed to go back to the hairdresser to sort it all out. Now very happy with both the colour and the cut (although I'm going to resume colouring it at home). I'd forgotten just how nice and relaxing visiting a hairdresser is. I'd focused on how expensive it was but forgot about the head massage when they wash your hair, and how pampered I felt. Not to mention just how great the cut is. Definitely be going back, but it's just too extortionate to have the colour done there as well.
