Are you graceful?

Do you glide when you walk? And are your body movements thoughtful, measured and economical? How do you do it??!! [wails]

Last week I caught sight of myself walking past a shop window. And I was horrified, I tell you, absolutely flummoxed. It took me a good few minutes to recognise the Neanderthal walking past in the glass window.

Ok I knew I slouched a bit but this is the first time I actually saw myself walking- shoulders slouched, clumping along with a fierce scowl on my face. Ewww...

I've started improving my posture, standing up straight and actually people noticed me. The attention I got (Not like Madame Brick, but I DID see someone do the sidelong glance, the double take).

It may be because with a proper ramrod straight spine, my norks were actually in their face and not dropping down like spaniel's ears. But hey ho, I'll take it Grin

Oh, another aside to this boring rambling- I've found I'm not clumsy anymore, once I start thinking about where my body is at any moment. Result!!

Really motherinferior? A trained Bharatanatyam dancer...

I learnt it when I was child, for probably 4 or 5r years. I could literally bend over backwards and touch the floor. Should have stuck with it...

The gradceful women I see on the streets may be apparitions.

I am a bit, when I'm not using a walking stick. Ballet and gym as a kid, and Pilates these days. But when I have to use a stick it gets a bit stompy. And with a bitch-resting-face the ability to glide just turns even more people against me. That or they can tell I'm a cow just by looking Grin

cafenoir · 12/08/2013 17:43

I'd love to be but at 5'0 with massive norks and whopping child-bearing hips, that's not do-able. I'm just thankful that I wasn't named Grace or Willow.

motherinferior · 12/08/2013 17:44

Oh yes, properly trained and used to be a choreographer. I think you have to do it to that level for the grace to rub off. She does t'ai chi now. Come to that Mr Inferior has done t'ai chi for years and years and has a certain feline grace.

Me, the baby elephant stomping continues.

CoTananat · 12/08/2013 17:47

Not terribly. But I can walk around all day with books on my head. I think I possibly have an unusually flat head. Grin

Rooners · 12/08/2013 17:58

My mum is always telling me I'm graceful. I don't know if I am. She says I never lost that thing babies have where their backs are straight and they are just lovely movers.

Hmm

ex told me the same thing so it MUST be true

Amrapaali · 12/08/2013 18:04

See, I think its not just walking. I don't think I'm graceful anywhere. Walking, running, opening doors, lifting things- always ends with a bang or a thud.

Only in Hollywood, can a woman be an endearing klutz. Real life- not so much. Grin

Don't know how much of it you are born with and how much you can learn.

What's your secret?

I try to be. I'm 5'11" and so look awful with stooped shoulders; it somehow makes me looker taller if I don't pull back 'em back with m'chin up!
I was once told that to have presence you should do that and move slowly.....I'm not certain how that transposes when dashing, nay, galloping for the bus like I was earlier.
I reckon it wasn't a pretty sight.

MexicanHat · 12/08/2013 18:14

Apparently I walk with a swagger. Must be my Manchester genes. Wish I was graceful. I should be, I was born on a Tuesday!!

Rooners · 12/08/2013 18:17

Umm I don't know Blush

I used to put it on a bit when I was young and beautiful (ha, Ok just young then) which involves sort of imagining that your head is being held up by a piece of string, and the rest of you is dangling from it so your feet just touch the floor.

Kind of relax, go floppy. I don't know if that works or not. I probably looked a twat. Grin

Rooners · 12/08/2013 18:18

There must be a guide on Ehow somewhere Grin

wordfactory · 12/08/2013 18:22

I have good posture if that counts. And I have a minxy walk (-am told) but when I get talking, I'm excitable and energized so I often knock things over.

LaFataTurchina · 12/08/2013 18:28

I'm pretty graceful. An entire childhood/teenhood of ballet and gymnastics will do that to you.

I worry about having bitchy resting face though.

Amrapaali · 12/08/2013 18:36

Is it true about being born on a Tuesday and being graceful? DD shot out of me on a Tues eve and she is quite graceful. But arent all 7 year olds?

Wuldric · 12/08/2013 18:36

DH clumps and stumps and slouches. He puts things down with a bang. He doesn't sit down, he just collapses with ruinous effects on a goodly number of chairs now. He breaks glasses and crockery on a daily basis.

I think part of the issue with walking at least is that he is slightly ashamed of his height (don't ask me why, I love the fact he's tall) so he slouches. That plus he swings his arms when he walks, giving the overall effect of a mountain gorilla.

TheMagicKeyCanFuckOff · 12/08/2013 18:38

I try to be graceful but I am a 6ft4 clumping elephant Hmm

MexicanHat · 12/08/2013 18:42

It's just from a little rhyme OP

Monday's child is fair of face
Tuesday's child is full of grace
Etc......

Eliza22 · 12/08/2013 18:42

Yes. Years of ballet.

Amrapaali · 12/08/2013 18:46

Oh yeah, that rhyme. Did not click. Blush

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/08/2013 21:16

Not at all. I don't think I slouch, but I do wibble around, and nod my head a lot and skip and stand on tiptoes and generally just look like a Thunderbird tbh. Oh dear.

WaitingForMe · 12/08/2013 21:33

I can be. Was easy until I was pregnant, now takes a little thought.

You need to walk slowly and do everything more slowly. Practise conscious breathing and that helps slow you down. Walk along a (fat) line so rather than walking with your legs apart, your thighs touch (this sadly no longer requires effort for me) as one foot goes in front of the other.

Heels help but I've permanently shortened the ligaments in my legs so I walk on my toes even in flats. Ballet dancers don't touch their heels to the floor much - in my opinion this is the source of grace.

appletarts · 12/08/2013 21:36

Yes I am. You have to imagine there is a very thin fine string coming out of the top of your head and it runs from the base of your spine out the top of your head.

appletarts · 12/08/2013 21:37

oh and then walk!
