Bras for 12 year old dd

Dd has been wearing a bra for a year or so but I've noticed recently she's grown quite a bit so needs new ones.

She was VERY shy first time and refused to be measured by an assistant. So we went to M and S and did it by trial and error, I took in a selection of sizes and I managed to judge what fitted her. I think she was a 30a. A few months later I bought her some B cup bras. But now I have no idea what size she is or where to go. She's quite fussy and prefers white bras. Are Debenhams any good?

Should I measure her at home first to get an idea? How do I do it?

She did try a couple of DD cups as suggested by the fitter and they didn't seem that big on her so I wouldn't be surprised if she's a DD soon.

I couldn't see any 28s though in either a D or DD. Where would I find that size?

The internet is the way forward, you will have a far better selection of 28/30s especially over a d cup. Bravissimo, brastop, leia, mycurvesandme, debenhams, amazon....you will probably find her range of wire-free relatively limited though although there are a few (e.g. the freya deco soft cup) which aren't too grannyish and go up to a GG

Dancergirl · 11/08/2013 19:10

Thanks, will have a look. Funnily enough I have just found her original M and S bras on their website in a 30D. I'm going to order for her to try on at home.

Is it just my dd that's so uncomfortable with the whole process??

Sounds like to me she should have been a 28 backsize too. The band around her body should be quite snug to start with on the last clasp. The elastic with give.

Try Bravissimo, they are great with over the phone fitting advice too.

I know she prefers white bras, but I see in the sales they have fun, not so sexy, colourful bras that might appeal to a young girl and make the experience less of a chore. What about this or this?

I was mortified when I was measured for my first bra. I feel for your daughter.Smile Only she needs to know her bra size.

HahaHarrie · 11/08/2013 19:18

Great minds think alike Stats!

Try Figleaves too.

Theas18 · 11/08/2013 19:22

sorry late to this thread.

never never m&s we've had the most awful experience with them with dd2.

bravissimo is fabulous. three ladies re just so lovely . dd2 has been fitted there since she was 11

Theas18 · 11/08/2013 19:26

and if your dd ifs brave ands tries wires shell prefer them very soon. she will greet almost no support from a non wired bra in d/dd cup ( signs I'd bet the back size is 28 too lol)

HahaHarrie · 11/08/2013 19:48

The elastic will give - not with!

Also if your daughter is well endowed, avoid M&S like the plague. Their bras over a c-cup are shite. For years the only bigger cup sized bras they did were fugly, mono-boob minimizer bras.

I agree, I think your daughter will need to get use to underwires. Non-underwire bras have no support for bigger boobs. If underwire bras are fitted well, they are not uncomfortable. Quite the opposite.

Dancergirl · 11/08/2013 19:50

Is underwired ok when they're still growing though?

OP posts:
StatisticallyChallenged · 11/08/2013 19:53

It is, as long as you keep a good eye on the fit. The risk with younger boobs is the same as with pregnant/feeding ones - that the wires end up sitting on the breast tissue. As long as you and she know how a good bra should fit and where the wires should be (sitting outside of the breast tissue not on anything soft) then it's ok

HahaHarrie · 11/08/2013 19:58

Exactly what Stats says. It's all in the fit. I've only ever worn underwire bras. I wore them throughout my pregnancies and had underwire maternity bras. No problems breastfeeding at all.

Dancergirl · 11/08/2013 20:01

Thanks. I know Bravissimo are good, I get a lot of my bras from there!

Sorry to jump in... My DD is 21inchband and 22 around her breast can anyone help me as to what size she is?

StatisticallyChallenged · 11/08/2013 20:05

Unfortunately there won't be a bra to fit her yet. The smallest back size actually manufactured is a 28 - lots of women who measure 24 and 26 are buying these and altering them, but at her current size the cups would all be miles off. Would a crop top be an option for now?

Danceasifnooneswatching · 11/08/2013 20:13

Thought as much.. She is very tiny still wearing age 8-9 clothes!!
She has been wearing crop tops for a while now but she has developed and wants to be like her friends.she is going into year8 so think she feels the pressure Hmm

mynotfinkso · 12/08/2013 01:44

Having spent a very frustrating afternoon trying to buy bras for DD, I've come to the conclusion that it's not a bit of wonder so many women wear the wrong size bra. It starts from their very first fitting!

DD is quite slight, she measures 25 under bust and 30/31 over. she's not unusual though because many of her friends are the same build. So why do 'first bras' start at size 28? And the vast majority of those 28s are only available in A or AA cup!!

The lack of choice in sizes is so frustrating. I don't want DD to have a life time of badly fitting bras and being ashamed of her boobs like I've had. Thankfully I've now seen the light and gone from a badly fitting 42B (measured at M&S - what a surprise!!) to a much more supportive and comfortable 36F. M&S wanted to put DD in a 30A. My poor (super skinny) daughter had massive back fat!!

Sorry for the rant but this has really made me see red today. We'll have to make a special trip to another city as we don't have John Lewis or bravissimo nearby. It shouldn't be like this though, should it? Something that's advertised as a 'first bra' should surely be available in small sizes. You know, the size that the majority of pre teens actually are!

Theas18 · 12/08/2013 07:27

mynot I totally agree! almost all teens must be wearing completely incorrect bras! I cannot imagine who is wearing the 32AA/A bras that seem to be the most common size for a " starter bra" as that is really quite a broad young lady with almost no breast tissue at all.

SorrelForbes · 12/08/2013 09:18

I do a hobby which involves a lot of size 6-10 teenage girls. Almost without exception they are all wearing bras around the 36A size. It's awful. I am converting them one at a time though!

mynotfinkso M&S are so appalling. I can't even walk through their lingerie floor in my local store as it makes me see red to watch them taking young girls into the fitting rooms clutching handfuls of 32AAs.

Debenhams stock quite a lot of 28 bands D-H cup in their Gorgeous range. The bands come up very small so could be good for your DD>

mynotfinkso · 12/08/2013 10:03

Thanks Sorrel, I'll try Debenhams too. M&S was truly awful yesterday. They didn't even have any 28s in the adult ranges. They just seemed totally bewildered that anyone could want such a size! As for the teen ranges, well there was a vast choice of A and double AA cups all the way up to a 38 back, a couple of B cups, and not much else!!! At one point I had 3 very bemused fitters wandering aimlessly around the shop looking to see if there was anything at all that might come anywhere near fitting. The best they could come up with was a 30C! We declined their generous offer!!

Theas18 · 12/08/2013 10:09

mynotfinkso

That was our issue in M+S . DD was bursting out of a ( wired) 28DD at 11 or 12 and the "fitter" started off by saying " you are really too young for wires you know" ( why I didn't say " well try making some non wired in that size then!) then said she couldn't possibly be that size and ended up suggesting that we could go up a bra band and down a cup and we might find something that fits.

It was just awful. Fortunately DD isn't too phased by it.

We haven't had brilliant experiences in Debenhams, just a very CBA attitude really. but we've had some sale bras from there. Small back/larger cup combos in bright colours are often in the sale ( but you do have to be wary of the " enhancing" or transparent/sexy ones!)

mynotfinkso · 12/08/2013 10:37

M&S choice is just truly appalling! The fitter did keep offering to come in and 'check the fit' but I kept telling them we were ok. It didn't take a genius to see that the bras didn't fit!

DD just needs some nice plain flesh coloured or even white bras for under her school uniform. Millions of girls will be needing the same thing. When are manufacturers going to catch on? I feel an email to M&s coming on! (Not that I think for a second that it'll make any difference but perhaps it'll make me feel better!!)

My 12 year old daughter is embarrassed about getting fitted for a new bra( understandably) so before we just did it by trial and error. Now she's grown we can't find any bra that fits her! Her measurements are 28.5 inches under and 35.5 inches on the fullest part. If anyone could tell me I'd really appreciate it x

HazleNutt · 18/04/2015 07:15

mother, try 28F or FF.
