Charity shop finds

Is there a thread already where we can post boast about any good charity shop finds? If so if someone could point me in the right direction I'd be very grateful, I like reading about what other people find.

Today I popped into a couple of local shops to get DD some old trousers to take camping. I found what I was looking for but also bagged myself:

A BNWT Monsoon top. Tag said £32 and I paid £3.95.
An unworn Phase Eight evening top in lovely shade of emerald green for £3.00.
Also an unworn casual white top from Jigsaw, with a silky panel in the front. Similar tops on their website are £40, this was £2.50.

Anyone else had any luck lately?

Oh I found a lovely Ted Baker dress in Help the Aged recently. Absolute snip and my size, but when I tried it on it did absolutely nothing for me Sad.

It's important not to get label dazzled in charity shops I find. A mint condition DVF wrap dress for £7.50 is still a waste of money and space if it doesn't quite fit/suit you. Probably my biggest error was a lovely LK Bennett beaded silk lined cardigan for a tenner, which I have only worn once because it doesn't fit into my lifestyle.

I found a nice Pepperberry summer dress the other week for £4.99 in a charity shop.

£ per wear was excellent, I have just got back from France and I wore it most days.

It isn't often I find bargains, so I was pleased with that one.

Will keep looking for more now.

I found a brand new Modalu bag the other dat. It still had the tags on but it was an eveni g type bag amd not really a colour I would buy. It was leather too and was priced at less than a fiver
I told the lady in the shop it was priced too low. Sometimes my knowledge of handbags does come in handy!

mrsblakey · 11/08/2013 15:49

quite alot of white stuff bits - skirts ,dresses tops -max I have paid is £8.
nic & ollie bag for a fiver
hollister shirt -£5.95
damsel in a dress dress ! for a fiver
avoca anthologie top - £3
pepperberry dress -£3.99
laura ashley skirts for £4 &£5.99

I do agree with other posts though you need to be careful & always check the garment thoroughly for holes or rips.

Haven't done so well in the charity shops this year, but the car boots have been amazing. Best buys have been an Issa wrap dress for £10, a BNWT Boden bikini for £3 and today a Marc by Marc Jacobs bag for £1.

To be fair, the charity shops round here have got greedy. One particular one is terrible, they were trying to sell a second hand Radley for £100! Another time they were trying to sell a fake Miu Miu bag for £55. When I told the cashier it was fake, she said 'I know that, if it was real I'd be charging £200!'

Bexicles · 11/08/2013 17:57

A brand new Whistles summer dress for £15 at my local Sue Ryder. I literally danced home! I tend to have a lot more luck with books and costume jewellery these days.

Gracie990 · 11/08/2013 19:30

I love charity shops, I buy almost all my clothes in them.
You do need to go often and I agree with not being dazzled by labels.

They have got greedy though, I saw some very fake LV shoes for £30 and Karen millen shoes £30 last week.

The British heart foundation is more expensive than new shops!

Tweet2tweet · 11/08/2013 19:32

I agree, some of the charity shops are beginning to charge silly prices. The whole lure of the charity shop is finding a bargain. ,my local one used to be fantastic but they employed a younger manager and she thinks if anything is remotely a label then you can charge £££. There was a Kipling bag they wanted £25 for and it's only £30 new on Amazon!

That said I've still managed a few bargains over the years:

Longchamp bag £1.99
Furla bag £4.99
Salvatore Ferragomo shoes £15
Shiring Guild cashmere cardigan £15
And just lat week,
Jaeger shirt £6.99
Boden jersey top £3.29
philosophy alberta ferretti skirt £3.99

Cream silk Chloe (not See by...) dress. Gorgeous, opulent and felt brand new. £70 but worth every penny. Can't see it costing less than £1000 new, although it is a past season.

busyboysmum · 11/08/2013 23:00

Love my Sunday mornings as that's when I do my clothes shopping at boot sales, this morning got a Lakeland black leather bikers jacket for £3, a gorgeous pair of soft leather gloves for £1 and 2 fabulous big patterned scarves for 50p each. Best trip was finding a mother and daughter my size selling off their mainly Karen Millen wardrobe, spent £90 but got around 20 fabulous items including a dress which didn't fit me new with tags so I ebayed it and it sold for £120. Which then made all my other items free!

VeryDullNameChange · 11/08/2013 23:11

Actually my best bargain in practical terms was my cut off (Capri fit) GAP jeans. Not a designer label but cost me one whole pound in the SCF bargain bin, and I've worn them over and over again all this summer.

I might start looking for a "new" work handbag actually

foxysocks · 12/08/2013 11:14

i have never found anything good in a charity shop. and i've never even been to a car boot sale! i don't think i have the patience.

i don't like ebay either, not being able to send something back sends me into panic. have had one good buy on there and one terrible experience so now just avoid it completely, it's not worth the stress (for me).

melodycool · 12/08/2013 14:05

Black silk Principles dress £8

That's only today - I have an addiction to charity shops and have managed to turn my wardrobe into quite a designer fest as a result!

Last week bought a Kooples dress for £8 and Cos dress for £10
Best buy recently has been a classic men's Burberry trench for £10

MyBoysAreFab · 12/08/2013 14:16

I love charity shop shopping! I got a lovely Noa Noa dress for £8, and a couple of Monsoon tops for a few quid each recently.

It is a bit disappointing however, to see so much more supermarket and Primark clothes in charity shops these days, and often for not much less than they would have cost new.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/08/2013 14:35

Found a gorgeous silk dress today for £4. Too big though. :(

bunnymother · 12/08/2013 14:56

I really love charity shopping! Although I think Oxfam prices are ridiculous. Unfortunately, that's the only charity shop, here, where I've seen w an Anya bag, Dior bag and some other exxy brands. Still, even taking that into consideration, I think their prices are too high. The cheaper charity shops where I am seem to receive more from the high street, and their prices are reasonable. My very favourite is my local Traid. I love the randomness of what you can find. It's the fashion equivalent of going through an old second hand book shop.

Lurleene · 17/08/2013 16:37

Hi, I've been away since Sunday so this is the first chance I have had to revisit the thread but I have enjoyed reading about all your bargains. I think area must play a huge part in pricing as while I am generally quite lucky where I live I am rarely successful in large towns. I've been in London this week and popped into a few charity shops hoping to get some nice labels but I found everything hideously overpriced e.g a ratty, bobbly Boden T-shirt for £15. I think I am better off sticking to small local charity shops.

OP posts:
glenthebattleostrich · 17/08/2013 16:47

My local charity shop is brilliant. Not many designer bits but lots of boden, designers at Debenhams and the kids clothes are excellent.

This week I got:

A john rocha dress for £4.99
A next shirt dress (new with tags) for £4.99
A next skirt, hardly worn £2.99
A whistles cowl neck vest for £2.00

I also got a brand new pinafore for DD for £1.40

Also managed to pick up some ebay bargains too so a very happy week, desperate for new clothes as I'm loosing weight and nothing fits anymore Grin
