How can I make my highlighted blonde hair darker?

For the last 10 years I've had my (what was naturally blonde) hair highlighted at a salon. I'm now very nearly 40 and I've really gone off the bright blonde look. I've just been on hols and some of my head is practically white, so 2 questions...

  1. what can I use to darken it now?
  2. at my next appointment what do I ask for?

Id like something like

i was the same and last time my hairdresser put in some lowlights as well as highlights (every third one i think?) it looks nicer and has toned it down a bit

SofaCanary · 10/08/2013 21:25

They can put a toner on all over to turn down the blonde volume a bit, works well.

I used to have this problem - just getting blonder and blonder. I now have a mixture of colours put through (I vary between 3/4 dependent on the time of year - mid brown, light brown, caramel and blonde). When they're put through make sure that the hairdresser weaves them rather than slicing because then you get a more natural effect rather than stripes.

I stuck on a L'Oreal Recital 7.3 honey blonde all over. It looked good on top of really blonde highlights. Now it's too dark after about a year and I'm going back to the hairdresser to put some highlights in (as I like this as a base colour).

what's the difference between weave and slice??

MissBeehiving · 11/08/2013 10:26

It's where the hairdresser takes a small section of hair and instead of dyeing the whole bit (slice) mine will take the end of the comb and weave the comb through and then just apply the dye to that bit (weave) so that there aren't stripes of colour.

Like ygritte, I just used L'Oreal Recital dark golden blonde over my light blond highlights and it worked a treat. As time goes on and I redo my roots its a perfect dark golden blond colour as at first the lighter blond would make it lighter than the picture on the box if you see what I mean.Im over 40 now and I found that a couple of years ago I suddenly found that I didn,t like being too blond,I felt like it looked like I was trying too hard and dare I say it slighty tarty!I think I look a lot younger with darker blond hair as it more natural looking.

Karbea · 11/08/2013 19:30

ilovewinter yes that's exactly how I feel. My hairdresser is really young and I wonder if she's colouring asshe would someone her age.

I've never dyed my hair myself, bit worried id screw it up :/

It's not easy. I've been getting them to put lowlights in my hair for ages, but they don't seem to stick very well and end up washing out after a few weeks, leaving me blonder than ever. My new thing is getting them to colour only the roots, so they don't re-highlight the full lengths each time, making them end up far too blonde. Might work eventually...

Nearlygran1 · 12/08/2013 11:03

I wouldn't colour the whole head yourself to tone it down. I have once! Looked very flat and very coloured. I have had highlights/lowlights for decades and know it does get blonder and blonder at the ends. At last appointment the hairdresser put in foils with 3 different dark blonde colours and fewer foils in light blonde. Before the foils were removed she coloured the hair outside the foils in darker blonde which I'd have said was light brown. I was pleased with the result and the roots hardly show after a month. I'd use a good shampoo and conditioner for coloured hair as the darker tones do fade.

Have you been going to the same salon for years? I'd do think whatever the stylist's age it's good to try somewhere else even just for a cut and finish. I'm in my late 50's and always try and wear my least mumsy (not muttony) clothes when I go in case I get a granny blowdry.

trickydickie · 12/08/2013 12:16

I am in the same boat. I got mine highlighted over a week ago. I told the hairdresser I was fed up going blonder and blonder etc. She said she would just get it all the same colour on this occasion and next time put low lights in.

Well it has ended up so blonde. You hit the nail on the head ilovewinter - as I feel it makes me look tarty/mutton dressed as lamb/just not right at my age (early 40's).

I was thinking about putting a dark blonde semi permanent dye through it. Just incase it is awful at least it will wash out.

Oh and too add to it all I have a home kit Brazilian blow dry kit I wanted to use soon. I have just read a thread where someone got the blow dry done and it made her existing colour turn orange. Dilema's.

Karbea · 12/08/2013 14:58

No it's a relatively new place, I had a hairdresser who did it for years and was always lovely, I've been going here for maybe18months, it's pretty bright and straw like now :/

Maybe I'll book in for a colour then...

Semi permanent is a good idea, but will that affect the condition? Being that it's pretty bad anyway?

i might try the l'oreal colour - thanks for recommending it
i went to a new colourist last time, and she did my colour too light, too blocky and too warm, and the regrowth is not pretty
with my old colourist the regrowth didn't show as the colour was more subtle

Emma4729 · 05/12/2016 11:30

Where can I get a good other to tone down blonde slash white hair I want it a warmer blonde it's too bright
