Cath Kidston New Season Clothes...frumpy or dumpy, or both..?

I'd never ventured into Kidston territory before this summer and went overboard, buying 3 of her balloon dresses...realized this was how they looked on me when I saw photos of myself looking like a total and utter bloomsbury/wild strawberry blurb...
However, I did order the mushroom skirt as the dress was ( thankfully) out of stock.
It's amazingly childish and for guffaws from family. Enough said.
There is a time and place for everything and magic mushroom prints belong in the nursery or for 5 yr olds...not women.
I'm going to flog my ones on eBay and send the vile skirt back.
What was I thinking?!?!🍄

It totally depends on your style though.
I'm quirky, indie and wear interesting prints all the time. I could pull off the garden birds dress easily with thick tights and brogues. If the mushroom dress didn't have a white background it would be nicer.

Twinklestein · 10/08/2013 22:06

Kew sprig & Meadow are sweet, but I made a pact with myself not to wear English floral prints over 40.

I'd wear them if I was 19 at a festival...

I love 40s style dresses so I decided to stick with DvF for fear of ridicule.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/08/2013 22:17

I haven't seen the mushroom skirt but I rather like the bird one. I'd wear it with high heels and a blazer for work, or with boots and a biker jacket at weekends.

I am DESPERATE to get hold of the train print dress from the spring/summer range this year (only just discovered it & it's sold out). Not a fan of the current mushroom print (a bit twee for my liking), but I like the bird print dress & have asked my mum for it for Xmas.
Cheeky ask, but if you have a train print dress in a size 10 I will gladly buy it! ;)

FrancesFarmer · 10/08/2013 23:19

Daisylonglegs, that balloon shape is hard for anyone to pull off imo.

In general, Kidston traces a fine line between cute vintage and nauseating twee; thus, one should proceed with caution.

I really love these floral print scarves - great for brightening up winter coats!

Elsiequadrille · 11/08/2013 00:02

I saw that bleddy toadstool print and thought it would be more suited to toddlers. Nice pattern, though. I'm actually considering the bird print skirt in the darker brown/black, however Blush

Did you see the cottage print, too? I bought the skirt and thought it was lovely in all its hideousness.

Elsiequadrille · 11/08/2013 00:03

I agree the white background on the toadstool print doesn't help.

MadBusLady · 11/08/2013 00:04

I'd wear any of those dresses with some shiny 60s beehive hair and stilettos to sharpen them up. But yes, not if I was looking to be comfy/casual, the shape is unforgiving.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/08/2013 00:05

I saw and loved the cottage skirt too. My concern is that they are a) so full and b) quite cheaply made, so the puffiness might well make me look a bit fat. I like full skirts, but I prefer the fullness to be a bit lower down, if that makes sense?

DoveDovePigeon · 11/08/2013 07:24

I really like the bird print, would buy the dress if it wasn't so expensive.

noddyholder · 11/08/2013 07:44

Horrible little girls clothes. Look like tea towels

Rooners · 11/08/2013 08:26

I agree with Remus. The fullness looks like it would be awkward, also they're not lined which to me is an instant turn off if something costs that much.

I have vouchers to use - I think I will wait for the sale, again...

GeekInThePink · 11/08/2013 08:45

cake there is a train dress on eBay :)

ShyGirlie · 11/08/2013 09:52

Remus u r exactly right - I ordered the trains skirt. It had an elasicated waist (shudders) and ballooned right from my tummy. I looked and felt awful in it - sooo fat and frumpy, so back it went!

Elsiequadrille · 11/08/2013 11:35

Remus is right the skirts are puffy and full, and yes, cheaply made, the actual cost was only approx £40. Rooners, my cottage print skirt is lined, in a contrasting navy material.

I love mine and think it suits me, though combined with lining and above knee length, meant pushing it down constantly, almost (if that makes sense).

DoveDovePigeon · 11/08/2013 17:11

I think £40 is a lot for a skirt.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/08/2013 17:21

I think £40 is reasonable for a skirt, if it's made well. I really do like the bird one, tea-towel or not :) , but I don't think it feels worth £40 tbh.

cakeisnotaproperbreakfast · 12/08/2013 01:48

Thank you Geek. Sadly it's not in my size :(
I won't be defeated though; I'll keep trawling ebay!

Dillydollydaydream · 12/08/2013 21:12

I like the bird print one too actually.

fozzy26 · 12/08/2013 21:46

I like the bird one too. Was considering getting it in the olive colour.

daimbardiva · 12/08/2013 21:51

I like the dresses but just feel they're too expensive - I have a simliar bird print one I got in Next last year for £35 and I love it and have had loads of wear out of it.

DoveDovePigeon · 13/08/2013 15:21

I tried on the bird dress today, great fabric and very wearable, but sadly too expensive.

mignonette · 13/08/2013 15:25

I saw a woman at the bottom of my street wearing the train print. I did do a double take. It reminded me of my brother's baby wallpaper in the early 70's. She was wearing it very literally with a victory roll and red lipstick.

Elsiequadrille · 13/08/2013 17:11

I suppose that's the only way to wear it [the train print] at least that I can think of.

Elsiequadrille · 21/08/2013 11:32

I actually bought the bird skirt (the darker colour). It's a heavier skirt, made with heavy thick fabric. So there might not be the same puffiness problem, but we'll see when I wear it.
However, unlike the summer skirt, there is no lining, and I think it was needed really.
