Bra fitting for young girl

Using the measuring method on here I measure DD (age 11) as a 28B. I'm not sure if she needs a bra for support yet but she is very self conscious about how pointy her breasts look and we've discussed that a lightly padded bra could mask this so she is keen to try. (She's also a bit mortified as I stupidly told her I thought her back measurement would be too small for any bra but it turns out she really does like me measure 28 so I am having to reassure her about my far bigger cup size!)

Is the only decent place to take a girl this small John Lewis? Presume bravissimo is bigger sizes only? If john lewis do I need to book am appointment or just turn up? It's about 20 miles to our nearest one so keen not to have a wasted trip.

She probably doesn't need underwired support yet, and her age is probably more suited to slightly padded crop tops (to prevent nipple show) rather than a styled bra, iyswim. I see people often recoomend Primark, Topshop etc for that, worth a look perhaps? Alternatively I know M&S have their Angel teen range, but M&S bras are not often well regarded by the guru's here.

Something padded would get rid of any nipple showing.

She has a collection of cropped tops from zara, m and s etc but haven't really come across padded ones other than in shock horror look at this padded bra for 8 year olds type media coverage which might have put retailers off selling them. What she has doesnt really mask her shape as she would like so I hoped actual bras like this padded teen bra might be better?

Wouldn't buy her underwired bras whilst she is still rapidly developing but she's going to senior school in September and turns 12 in January - is that really too soon for any sort of bra?

DD has been wearing a bra since she turned 10y last year. She needs one. She's 11y now and also starts secondary this summer. Using the measurement thing on here she is in the wrong size though - she currently has a 32B (or 30?) - but this is wrong - she should be a 28 DD but that sounds really large, and probably not even possible to buy! (she measures 28/33.5)

Matalan has really good ones, my 11 year old likes slightly padded for the same reasons. They are proper bras, and I got black, and nude ones for dd as she is self conscious about them showing through school blouse.

They look pretty similar to the John Lewis one you linked to.

My DD wasn't as young as yours, but I took her to John Lewis and they were really kind. I think they do a pretty good range of sizes but it might be worth phoning ahead to check they stock a 28in back.
And underwires are fine I believe, as long as they fit properly (ie cups big enough to go all the way round the breast up to the armpit), and you have to check them regularly as she grows.
Our JL branch do appointments, but you turn up and make them on the day (usually about a 20-30 min wait).

Hulababy, a 28dd is really not big at all - it's the old way of measuring and the weird media perception of what constitutes big boobs that makes us think that. My DD is a 32dd but looks tiny compared to me at that age, when I wore a 36c. I'm a 30g. She actually looks to be what I would have thought was a 34b back in the Dark Ages day.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/08/2013 19:03

Dd has a 28d from John Lewis. it is a bit padded and non- underwired. There was only a choice of two though. A d at that back size isn't big at all.

Hulababy · 02/08/2013 19:27

I know not big in terms of cup size - but it seems a very difficult size to buy. Been looking at the high street places online and not many have that size.

StatisticallyChallenged · 02/08/2013 19:54

for the 28DD, look at bravissimo, mycurvesandme and brastop. You will probably find non-wired a bit harder just because a lot of the companies doing the 28DD are the likes of freya and panache who are generally more adult but they will have some

John lewis does these in a 28B including some non wired but lightly padded ones

I've just helped my DSiL find some bras for her 11 yr old DD. She measures 27/31 and needed a 28DD in a Debenhams Gorgeous padded plunge and a 28D in a Therapy padded balconette (House of Fraser).
