I am going back to start a new career after being a full time student for 3 years and before that a (scruffy) SAHM.

Right now, my hair is light brown/reddish/going grey so I colour it from a packet its normal colour, just to take out most of the grey. It is fine and frizzy/wavy and one length just below my shoulders so I always wear it in a pony tail with one of DDs hairbands. I think this makes me look old and tired.

I really want to look groomed, or at least tidy to be taken seriously at work, as this will be my first full-time, non-mum job for ages. I will be expected to visit people's houses and also attend legal proceedings, so need to look competent and smart.

All I can think of is asking the lady that comes to cut our hair to do a bob or something - I think I might need to bit the bullet and go to a hairdressers but this lady has become a family friend after cutting all our hair since DD was old enough to need it (14 years), so perhaps to start with, I could offer her some better ideas to see what she thought.

Does anyone have any links to 'good' hair that doesn't involve a clever blowdry? Thank you!

I just got all of my hair cut off, it's AMAZING Grin.

I think that you should kindly ditch your hairdresser friend, then pay a bit extra to make sure that you get a great haircut.

Unicorns - I have been thinking this but no idea how I could do it and not hurt her feelings. I'd like to give her a chance to do it for me - when you got all yours off, what did you say to the hairdresser? Did you give them free rein or take some ideas?

Is the one-length what you've asked her to do? (In which case she's doing what you wish) or do you say "Oh, make me look sleek.trendy, approachable" and she does the regular cut.

If your hair is curly /wavy what about a collar length bob? Then you can wear it loose, it might curl more (think Alex Pollitzi) or you can gather it back with a naice hair gripper if you want a more 'business' look.
Curly wavy hair is not going to be sleek and straight without alot of work from you. Go with it, don't fight against it Grin

I'd love a regular hairdresser that came to my house. I don't like the disco music and looking up at myself in the mirror with my hair unflatteringly pegged up and wet .

No idea on what you can do with your hair as I'm having the dilemma but you could tell your hairdresser you were given or won vouchers for a salon?

I knew roughly what I wanted, so I Googled pixie cut, and showed the results on image view to my hair dresser. He got me to tell him which ones I liked and why, and which ones I didn't like and why. It was great, I really felt that he understood what I wanted. I asked him what he thought too though, whether he thought I would suit the haircut etc.

He also suggested an alternative haircut (longer) based on what my hair was like. It sounded pretty good, but I'm super-pleased with how the pixie cut turned out, and so was he.

70 I am the problem - I just ask for 'a bit of a trim' as I am completely clueless. I asked about a fringe a few months ago and she said she didn't think so. I haven't suggested anything since!

I love fringes. Why don't you go to a salon, tell them you'd like to consider a fringe, but to keep the rest of the length (if that's true!), and ask them what they would suggest?
