Ear piercing aftercare

My 6 y old DD had her ears pierced this week, it all looks good and no longer sore / sensitive to touch etc. They advise to use antiseptic for 6 weeks, 3 times a day - I'm wondering how long do people actually do it? Seems a bit much to do it for so long when everything looks healed?

Also thinking about swimming lessons - next one will be in exactly a week after the piercing. Thinking of missing that one, just in case, but going to the lesson after that (2 weeks after the piercing).

What are people's experiences/thoughts?

Keep going with the antiseptic and twisting the earrings for a few weeks yet - it does take a while to heal inside. We were advised once a day (not three times) for six weeks, and DD1 was warned against touching her ears with unwashed hands. She had no problems whatsoever.

I think you'll be OK for swimming, in chlorinated water, at least.

In two weeks time, I mean.

You aren't supposed to twist the earrings apparently.

Clean them yes but don't twist, that's more likely to cause an infection, other than keeping them clean they are best left alone.

Don't twist the earring, it'll never heal that way and any dirt surrounding the piercing will enter the wound.

Antiseptic is way too harsh. Use a saline solution twice a day at first, reducing to once a day after a few weeks or so. Use a heaped teaspoon of salt to 1 litre of boiling water. Soak them in as hot as water as your DD can manage. Then rinse with plain water.

I would put plasters over the earrings for swimming. It won't cover them completely obviously but it'll reduce any chance of dirt entering. Do a soak as above as soon as you can afterwards.

My 11yo had hers done on Friday (you can tell it's the summer holidays Grin )

She has a bottle of aftercare solution that we have to use 3x daily (washed hands before)

On the website it says twist 180 degrees.
At the piercing they said just slide them enough to clean.

When I had mine done (nearly 30 years ago) it was surgical spirit and twist (ouch)

I keep looking at my lovely DD with her gold studs Smile
