Not sure, watching with interest, the White company are the same and you can no longer return to store for a refund. I'm sure there are a few others out there that are also guilty, Isabella Oliver/Baukjen springs to mind.

The retailer has to pay the cost of returning any goods that are sent incorrectly or as a substitute if the original item ordered was out of stock

The retailer has to refund delivery costs but doesn't have to pay the cost of returning the goods.

You get your postage out refunded if you return the whole order within 7 days but don't think there is anything about cost of returns being refunded.

The White Company- I returned items to the store last weekend- no problem.

Your postage out? Interesting. So if I buy from marks then return to store they refund postage?

No idea about returning to an M&S store but I returned some shoes I'd bought for DD the other week by post and was surprised to see that I'd been refunded the whole lot - i.e the cost of the shoes and the delivery charge (returns are free).

You would have to exercise your right to cancel under the distance selling regulations and return everything in the order and even then a lot of retailers would need prompting rather than automatically refunding outward postage so often it depends if you can be bothered with a long argument. For M&S as delivery to store is free its probably less hassle to order to store, try on if required and make your mind up about goods there and then and return anything that doesn't suit.

I actually think a lot of retailers are changing their set ups to get round this e.g. I ordered from All Saints sale with free delivery and just returned half the order which cost me £11 at the post office. I'd ordered two sizes to try so was expecting this but would have been far preferable to me to pay a flat outbound postage of e.g. £5 and then get free returns. I guess by putting the charges this way round All Saints lower their costs and ensure you can't claw any more back using the legislation.
