How old were you when you noticed your first grey?

Hi

Anyone else out there getting increasingly alarmed at the amount of greys they're getting?

Ok, so I probably noticed my first before I was 20, but it was a one off. If I found another, it would probably be 6 months later. I'd pull it out, be a little concerned, but then that would be it, for possibly another 6 months, or more.

I'm 29 and recently, I'd say over the past 4 months or so, I've noticed I'm getting much more. As soon as I've pulled one out, another one or two pop up and it's really noticeable against my very dark brown, almost black, hair.

I know there are more important things to worry about Grin, but just wondered if late/end 20's is a common age to start going grey.

I hate the thought of having to dye my hair regularly from now on. My hair is buggered as it is and adding dye would probably just cause it to give up and break off.

So how old were you?....

  1. I noticed that charming silvery white thing going on at my temples. NOT IMPRESSED. Now 30, and it means my temples need patching up every few weeks. I hate it and will dye my hair as long as I can. Some people, esp. those with darker skintones, look fabulous with grey/greying hair. I am not one of them. I'd look so awful.

Early 40s. My dad is 81 and barely has any grey, but I'm taking after my mum.

  1. It was a coarse thick white hair in my fringe. I'm 38 now and have a grey streak through the front right of my hair. I was dying it out, but haven't in 8 months I quite like the effect.

Similar to you, OP. 28 now and get a couple a month compared with a couple a year. They are wiry and white.

Like fallenmadonna I was 14! Distinct memories of friends in school yard pointing them out Sad.
Now in my 40's and fed up of dyeing, but mine is very white, not an attractive shade at all, so am dithering over stopping the colouring!

I'm in my 40s and don't have any yet [smug emoticon]. I think I take after my father's side of the family and they all go grey very late (crap genes in many other ways, but at least we have Nice Hair as we hurtle towards an early grave).

None yet and I'm 39 next birthday. Mid brown naturally though it's a little lighter atm. Letting it grow out though as I cba with the upkeep.

I have my dad's hair which just seemed to get blonder over time till one day I realised he was white.

Mid 30s. Only started dyeing it when I was 35 and I couldn't pluck them all out anymore
I've started using semi perm dye as I want to grow all the permanent dye out (never ever ever use colour xxxl ever ever). I look all witchy when the start to show through.

Early 20s, and they're white/have no pigment.

Am the same age as you OP and they have definitely mulitplied in the last year.

Holding off the hair dye for as long as I can.

23 , I went blonder and blonder with highlights til I was 30 then gave up and went back to my natural dark brown to find I'm pretty much 100% grey if I'd ever let the dye actually grow out I retouch every 3 weeks.

Am almost 38 and have never found any grey hairs yet. I have no idea why though, as I would consider it fairly normal to be getting grey hairs at this stage, certainly all my friends seem to.

Genetics - they give and they take away on the appearance front, don't they? They have given me shapely legs and thick, bouncy, non greying hair. Sadly, they have also given me a rounded middle (apple shaped), far too big boobs, and one prounounced frown line (but no wrinkles as such).

Much to be grateful for, but much to feel cheated by as well!

I was 25, it was on the postnatal ward after giving birth to DS so I blame him!

17, while doing A Levels. For 20 years more it was just a case of plucking the odd one out but in the last year (37+) I have started regularly dying my hair to cover a little clump of greys at the roots.

I'm 28 now and have shitloads. Am weighing up whether to start dyeing or go with it. Wouldn't mind at all if they weren't so much coarser and resistant to styling!!

Badvoc, that's what I want to know. Like I mentioned upthread, I always assumed that was a purple rinse

I had the odd stray grey hair in my twenties.

However, I really noticed them after the birth of my second child when I was 31.

I have a smattering now, but if I highlight my hair, it sort of blends in and is not too noticeable. My hair is naturally very dark, almost black so they show up more than other hair colours. I don't want to get into the regular hassle of dying my hair, so I stick with highlighting it to avoid having too many roots.
