Dd is nearly 8. For the last year it has taken me at least 20 minutes to get her thoroughly brushed through everyday. She has very, very thick hair which is just a mass of tangles every morning.

We condition it, use detangle brush on it. I have even on occasion put morrocan oil in it after washing but still not much easier the next day.

Any advice welcome. I have another 3 children so time is of the essence in the morning, which is why I am after some tips.

No tangle tamer and tangle teaser are completely different. It's not just the handle!

Are they?

Denman hair brush is the best thing for my dd who has Afro hair.

Have a look at the British curlies website.

My hair sounds identical to your DD's - I'll brush it wet and put it into a plait, and by the next morning I'll take the plaits out and it's knotted again.
I have the tangle teezer, and also the Kent Maxi De-tangling brush ( here ) but make sure you get the maxi and not the smaller one. I agree that the tangle teeer just doesn't go deep enough and only skims the top layer of the hair. I tend to use the Kent brush for most of the hair, and then the TT at the end to get out any smaller knots. I can honestly say that the Kent brush has been the best hair buy, ever. I think all female friends and family have the same brush because it's just brilliant. I don't really know the logic behind it, but the bristles are really really thick and don't have a bobble on the end, so nothing gets caught, IYSWIM?
Amazon isn't the cheapest place to buy, but just wanted to link so that you know what it looks like. Hope it helps - my hair was a nightmare everyday until I got this brush! :)

Dd has extremely thick hair which has a bit of curl to it and we have recently realised that we should wash it in the morning as if it is at all damp at night it tangles really badly. I have taught her to wash her own hair so can get on with other stuff - she has been doing this from aged 6. Brush dry hair with mason Pearson bristle brush and never brush wet hair - use a decent wide toothed comb or an Afro comb. I find that there is no point using children's products - we use the Aldi Pantene equivalent so quite a heavy conditioner and comb it through wet. nit combing takes us the better part of an hour...

Definitely no brushes! Tangle teaser/tamers or ordinary brushes etc just pull and don't work for thick curly hair!

My 7 yo DD has very thick, very curly hair and it was a nightmare to brush through! I now wash, condition, comb through with a large wide tooth comb, rinse and recomb her hair and tie it back in a ponytail before bed. I always let it dry on its own and I make sure she washes it every other day and I wash it for her once a week and comb it through properly then too. Other than that it gets left aloneSmile

I bought a shower comb in pound land (£1 obv!) and the wide tooth comb in tesco (£2.25) and I use the same shampoo/conditioner as I buy for myself for her. Smile

We aren't in the same situation as my dd has fine and wispy hair, but if it were cut into a different style would it not make it easier? Maybe with some layering?

My dd has hers layered. It is still a knotty tangle...and here is my worst confession.

When she has a hair appointment, I have a hair amnesty a few days before. The bliss and freedom of not having to battle with her hair is bliss. Then I watch the hairdresser comb it out, and I get a bit Blush but not enough to not do it the next time!

Oh Orange- you have made me feel normal. When we are on holiday some days I don't bother with her hair, cause I feel I need a break from it. The freedom is liberating!! So was lovely to read your post above that you love the rare days you don't have to bother with your dd hair. Haha.

Well I bought the tangle tamer late afternoon. Very quickly brushed Dd's hair at 4.30pm Blush with it and it seems amazing. As I have said I have the tangle teaser and it doesn't remotely compare to the tangle tamer.

Anyhow will experiment some more and get back to you all. Thanks again.

Well I have been ill for 4 days, and dh hasn't brushed her hair. This morning..Ye Gods, it was like Medusa. Tangle tamer sorted it pretty fast, although I did give up on one bit that had obviously been dipped in food!
