Anyone tried taming their frizzy locks with the "Curly Girl Method"?

Has anybody tried this?
I've been straightening my hair for years but quite fancy going curly again. When I googled how to repair heat-damaged curls I came across this, I was wondering if using basically nothing but conditioner on my hair can really work??

I have been doing cgm since the beginning of the year and haven't looked back.

I used to have 'triangle' hair, as I have flat roots and big curls. Since doing cgm, I have lost some volume, but I have lovely curls and no frizz. A few weeks ago, my mum commented that my hair had changed, so I told her what I was doing.

I use the body shop rainforest moisture conditioner and I use the shampoo once every other week, just to make sure my hair gets a proper clean. I also use boots curl cream, although I can go without it.

I scrub my hair for 4 minutes. I have a shower timer, which I use. Or sometimes, I choose a song on my iPod to time myself.

There used to be lots of us on here that did it. I think it is well worth trying, but it works better for some than others.

No doubt, it will improve your hair condition and give you amazing curl, but eventually I could no longer stand the way it made my hair feel, I just felt dirty all the time (I did CG for about 2 years). The first time I washed it properly I could have wept with joy and I wouldn't do it again.

Ooo, might have to google this, I have triangle hair if it gets too short and just a big frizzy bush if it's long... Hmm

We do curly girl for my DD1 and have done for the last two years. It is wonderful. She has spiral ringlets that are defined, bouncy and shiny whereas she used to have candy floss fluff that tangled.

We don't have too much cash so we use boots essentials conditioner - no silicone and 60p for 500ml bottle Grin we use that as the cowash and leave in and finish with the boots curl creme and then leave it the hell alone.

Once every so often we use a sulphate free shampoo (we have bed head foxy curls - cheap in tk maxx and has lasted over a year so far). For a deep clean.

We sometimes do a protein tretment of Olive oil, mayonnaise and eggs left on wrapped in a towel for ages then rinsed off in cool water hot water scrambles the egg, not good

Go for it OP it works for us.

Brilliant thanks!
chanie44 thanks for the product pointers, I was wondering if I had to splash out on expensive products or if sensible high street stuff would be ok.
I'm definitely going to try it, if nothing else I'm hoping it's going to get my hair q bit more healthy again after the abuse I've been putting it through over the past few years.
I also used to get terrible triangle hair, so I'm hoping for similar results :)

I tried for ages and it just made my hair feel really lanky so I have gone back to shampoo and conditioner. My hair looks so much better again (and feels clean!).

justkeeponsmiling · 21/07/2013 20:00

Thanks again for the product pointers sneaky, I'm so glad this can be achieved with these basic products! When I looked into this most websites recommended really expensive products so I wasn't sure it was worth trying on a budget

I'm kind of doing it for dd although I use shampoo once a week as she's only 2 so gets all kind of crap in her hair. Then usually every other day I wash it with conditioner using a wide toothed comb. I use the naked range. Her hair's still a frizz ball at times but isn't getting as dry and matted as it used to.

forcookssake · 21/07/2013 20:05

I'm going to give this a whirl, it'd be ace to banish the halo of fluffy frizz I get when I shampoo my hair Sad

Curlygirly · 21/07/2013 20:06

Reading with interest. Should really change my name to Frizzygirly!

BrownBearBrownBear · 21/07/2013 20:46

I do a "lighter" method in that I still use shampoo (sulphate and silicone free) but changing my hair products and the way I deal with my hair after it's washed has made a huge difference. My hair is curlier, less dry and frizzy. I can go longer between washes without the roots getting greasy too. Go for it!

dexter73 · 21/07/2013 21:36

What products do you use BrownBear?

justkeeponsmiling · 21/07/2013 22:23

Yes brownbear and how are you dealing with it differently? Do you do that wrapping-in-a-tshirt thing? And same question to you chanie

Nomnew · 21/07/2013 22:31

I rinse with cold water at the end and when I use the tshirt method, the curls are much shinier and better defined.

www.dooyoo.co.uk/hair-care/umberto-giannini-flirty-curls-scrunching-jelly/

I scrunch the above onto wet hair after second conditioner is rinsed out. It's a fantastic product and doesn't seem to leave a residue. If you use too much you can scrunch out the crunch.

LakeFlyPie · 22/07/2013 10:02

I do a 'CG Light' method with silicon free shampoo and conditioner and either the Umberto Giannini curl gel or Boots curl cream or a mixture of the 2 on wet hair to style. Losing the silicon in serums and conditioners I used to use has definitely reduced the frizz.

BrownBearBrownBear · 22/07/2013 12:18

This is my new routine:

I use naked shampoo from boots.
Tresemme organic conditioner. Loads of it. Comb it through and put in my parting. Rinse, but not too thoroughly. I tip my head upside down so all the hair falls forward.

Get out of the shower with my head still upside down (!). Dry off my body with a normal towel. Squeeze the wetness out of my hair using a microfibre towel (I have a deva curl one. It's very small but does the job).

Apply naked leave in conditioner all through hair. Scrunch in a tiny amount of umberto Gianni curl friends scrunching jelly.
Tip my head back the right way up - I try to leave it about 5 minutes after getting out of the shower.

I then leave my hair to dry naturally. I do not touch it at all until it's dry. This is important as I found trying to sort out a parting at this point or fussing with it at all made it frizzy.

Once it's dry I might put in a tiny bit more of the leave in conditioner to take away any fluffiness, but it rarely needs much.

Hope that helps! It really has been transformative to my hair.
By the way, my hair is below the shoulder and very porus so takes a good couple of hours to dry naturally.
:)
