Clothes for my mum tum - fitted or loose the way to go?!

Hi
I've just popped to Ssinsburys and they have some nice new stuff in. I picked a few things up but ended up putting them all back!
My problem is my mum tum, which I need to try harder to do something about, but for now it looks weird as I have a small waist and then a bump!
I have been wearing loose floaty tops but when I look in the mirror I think I look even bigger than I am and kind of early pregnant!!
Fitted tops would suit my waist but again surely I will look preggers as the tum would be emphasised.

What style should I go for? I really need some new work tops but don't want to look frumpy but also am quite self-conscious. I'm finding since returning from maternity leave some people seem to be talking to my tummy!!

I prefer floaty, but I know what you mean. I have a lovely autograph weekend M&S shirt that's lovely and flattering, but it's literally the only flattering thing I own!

Draped jersey works well for a lot of women, that's why there's so much of it in the shops. H&M are particularly good at doing it well on the cheap - the only problem is that if it creates after washing then it's a total sod to iron.

Eg this or this sort of thing.

My exhaustive years of research in covering my flab (which would probably have been better spent in losing the flab) have taught me it's less about the cut and more about the material. Jersey is flattering, plain cotton is shit - just experiment a bit.

...."creates" = "creases" - bloody iPhone

I have the same issue, which is stressing me slightly as I'm back to work shortly and have no suitable clothes. I've bought a dress from Great Plains in their sale, which is quite flattering (won't let me link, but it's the rainbow drop dress).

This is better quality than the price suggests and very flattering on the tum. I got asked if I had lost weight when I wore it last week! :) Nice with a pencil skirt and a fabric biker jacket.

Hamwidgeandcheps · 21/07/2013 20:39

It's really hard. I went for jersey layers with leggings but now I have lost a bit of weight they make me look fatter. I am having most success with empire line dresses - white stuff usually or trapeze shaped tops. Hope that helps

I tend to go for blouses that skim rather than float or cling iyswim. I can do tees but they can't have anything like elastane in otherwise they cling to my tum. If you can go for mid to high rise trousers/jeans so that most of your tum is hidden.

carrie74 · 21/07/2013 21:29

Yup, skimming clothes better than clingy or floaty. I also find ruched tops and dresses fantastic. Me&Em are excellent at these things, and their sales are phenomenal.

VeryDullNameChange · 21/07/2013 21:44

Ah yes, ruching, that's the word I was looking for. I get confused because all my ruched tops also happen to be draped.

Jemster · 22/07/2013 06:49

Thanks everyone. There were a couple of jersey type tops with ruching in Sainsburys that would do for work. I might go back and try them. Then I need to try and do something about the tum. It's so much worse after dc 2. I didn't have this problem after dc1.

I find this sort of style very flattering when I had (actually its still there, who am I kidding?) a saggy tum:
