Need new clothes, but what to buy?

I went through my summer clothes today and I hate it all. Dresses are too fussy or old, skirts don't fit, tops are boring, shoes are ancient.

I am not a style freak. I am a plain, boring SAHM with not much money but no desire to buy from cheap places. So help me out please. What one or two essential items should I buy to make me feel better without breaking the bank? And they have to be sensible, ordinary clothes that a boring SAHM would be likely to wear.

If you don't reply with good ideas, I will wear jeans and t-shirts all summer, interspersed by my favourite skort on hot days.

I live in linen trousers in the summer - don't do showing of legs then.

Top Shop's quite good atm.

sugarfree · 07/06/2006 16:13

I went clothes shopping today because I was in the same boat.I got 3 tops/teeshirts,white loose trousers, long navy skirt, cropped jeans and a pair of canvas shoes for £80 total.Shopped at New Look,H&M and Next.
Absolutely nothing in Dorothy Perkins or River Island that I liked.

blueteddy · 07/06/2006 16:16

Linen trousers are always good, as they don't really date & can be worn year after year.
You could also get a nice skirt & a couple of strappy tops.
Zara are very reasonable & the clothes are good quality, as is H&M.

DumbledoresGirl · 07/06/2006 16:18

I am way too old for Top Shop!! (I am 41 if that helps). I don't mind showing my legs as I still have good legs, but is linen easy to wear? Doesn't it crease all the time?

£80 for that lot doesn't sound bad, although I would like a skirt or dress of some sort to shut dh up!

Any pics of what sort of thing I should be looking for would be gratefully received. Smile

new look

i was in there today getting a couple of bargains in the sale dept

not your thing though i think, a pair of pink hotpants and a velvet mini skirt, 3 quid each

blueteddy · 07/06/2006 16:20

It does crease, that is the downside!
Have a look in oasis too. They had some summer bits in the sale when I went in there last week. I picked up a nice pair of flip flops reduced from £25 - £10!

DumbledoresGirl · 07/06/2006 16:21

Grin Not quite what I had in mind for housework and fetching kids from school!

I am feeling so old lately, but I don't want to succumb to M&S twinsets quite yet. Sigh. What to go for?

If you are on a budget why not try asda/ tescos, they have linen trs, skirts tshirts the like maybe worth a try.

Tinker · 07/06/2006 16:21

No, Top Shop is not as it used to be. Am 41 also. Can wear linen trousers year after year, cool, creases are part of its "charm"

I will look out for linen trousers then although the idea of them doesn't fully appeal.

What sort of skirts are in these days?

OP posts:
blueteddy · 07/06/2006 16:23

Cropped trousers?

blueteddy · 07/06/2006 16:24

Pencil skirts are in, but I think they will go out just as quick!
There are still lots of floaty skirts about, but not gypsy style.

DumbledoresGirl · 07/06/2006 16:24

I have one pair of cropped trouser (wearing right now!) that are OK although in cream so they show the dirt all the time - grrr.

Do you have a TK maxx near you, I bought a few summer staples in their a few weeks a go.

A jagged edged Nougat skirt in black linen, a black linen knee length skirt and a crochet style bolero that I think came to £60 for the three and can be mxed and matched with other bits from my wardrobe.

Zara also have some nice stuff in at the moment.

And what's wrong with twinsets?

mazzystar · 07/06/2006 16:32

lots of skirts seem to be printed, full or a-line-ish to or just over the knee. pencil skirts are a classic but not exactly sahm-wear.

blueteddy · 07/06/2006 16:33

Yes, there are lots of printed skirts atm, especially red & white ones!

mazzystar · 07/06/2006 16:34

George/Asda have some very nice things if you are slim-ish and if you are not worried about how they managed to make stuff for £18.

Fillyjonk · 07/06/2006 16:36

do they really have linen trousers in tescos? i have been searching.

how much?

leander · 07/06/2006 16:57

Linen trs £15 in red beige black white brown and Khaki.

Fillyjonk · 07/06/2006 17:03

oooh....oooh...and i have the car tommorrow....

Fillyjonk · 07/06/2006 17:04

is that asda or tescos?

Aaarg and their sweatshop ethics are crap too...

And I have no money

but i want some.

Are they nice?

WelshBoris · 07/06/2006 17:07

DG I wish you'd stop lying

You cant be 41 youre 30 tops

DumbledoresGirl · 07/06/2006 17:16

I wish WB. I don't know what has happened to me of late. I should be posting under the depressed threads I think. Turning 40 was fine but in the last few weeks, I have become so aware of being middle aged. My greatest assets have always been my legs and my hair but now my hair is greying and I can't get a dye to stay on and I feel really past it.

Moan moan moan. But yes, my figure is OK (10-12) and I don't care about sweat shops if it gets decent clothes on my back
