Yes, same here. I'm 35 now and love it when people say I have 'such lovely clothes'. Never got told that in my 20s.

chanie44 · 18/07/2013 06:17

Yep me too. When you are young, you can get away with much more so as you get older, you need to be more choosy.

KatyS36 · 18/07/2013 08:33

Yes, me too.

More money, and better figure too :-)

MyChildDoesntNeedSleep · 18/07/2013 08:38

Haha, yes to the better figure too! Smile

janmoomoo · 18/07/2013 16:06

Definitely. When I was young I was all boho chic, charity shops, one pair of DMs for everything. I could chuck on a little indian cotton dress and be done. Any interest in fashion was too girly and conformist.

Now I have a bit more money, know what suits me, have had my colours done. The boho hippy look I used to rock isnt so good on the over 40s, you start to look a bit bonkers. Now I am so much more interested, to the point where I sit in meetings and look at what everyone is wearing rather than focusing on the agenda!

MadBusLady · 18/07/2013 17:11

I've always been interested (though a late starter at 19ish) but I also think my figure/body/face are betternow in mid 30s than they were ten years ago. I was abit unformed then, i ate crap and didn't work out, and my skin and hair were bonkers. Don't know why there is such a focus on youth, not that many people look stunning at 17 IME!

QueenMaeve · 18/07/2013 17:48

I grew up knowing a lot about fashion as my mum owned 2 boutiques. But I can definitely say now at 36 I am sure of my own style. I know what suits me and I don't mind paying for quality. I love to keep a eye on trends but I also keep and wear clothes that are years old.

QueenMaeve · 18/07/2013 17:50

Also good idea for a thread op! I love to find a kindred spirit to talk clothes to Smile

madmomma · 18/07/2013 19:27

Same here OP. I adore clothes and it took me until age 30 to be able to buy anything half-decent. Now at 34 I take so much pleasure from my clothes and from looking at what other people are wearing. Sadly my figure is 3st heavier than 10 yrs ago, which is a ball-ache, but nice clothes are nice clothes whatever their size.

Me too...also I've just emerged from the baby years and I've lost a bit of weight. A few months ago I wandered in off the street to a random hairdresser for my annual visit - she gave me a fantastic cut, easy to manage and flattering. I think for the first time I am pleased with my looks and keen to make the most of them.

(Paradoxically?) I have been spending a lot of time of the fwr boards and feel like looks are a nice thing to have but not essential. I can feel I can enjoy them more without fretting that this or that imperfection trashes the whole lot.

madmomma · 18/07/2013 23:08

fwr?

SinisterSal · 18/07/2013 23:18

The Feminism / women's rights topic on here!
I found it helpful to come to terms with my looks - gave me perspective. I'm perfectly average and actually, that's good enough. I know S&B and FWR are not natural bedfellows but I lurk on both.

Dorange · 18/07/2013 23:22

Just now at 36 I started to take an interest on shoes
Shoe shopping never was so difficult before
I am so fussy now, I can't find a decent pair for my holidays

madmomma · 19/07/2013 20:45

Ah gotcha sinister :)

Tigerstripes · 20/07/2013 22:21

Me too! I dressed really badly at school/college/uni/first job and look back at photos of me then and groan. For a few years now I've been really interested in fashion and have also been discovering the styles that suit me. I read fashion blogs and love looking at what others wear.

fatedtopretend · 20/07/2013 22:28

Loving this thread.

I jumped ship from a finance based job to a fashion job in January this year. There is no way I could have done my job in my early 20s, I know fashion now, not just the top 5 top shop trends!

Once you own one decent bag, pair of shoes and watch I think you can be classed as on your way to stylish! That is impossible when young unless you are from money or ridiculously good at saving!!
