How would a 4 yr old carry cash at school disco - purse for a boy?

DS has a school disco and they have to take cash for food/drink. DD will be there with a purse/bag over shoulder but what the heck does a 4 yr old boy do? Can you buy purses for boys?

Any good?

intarsia · 14/07/2013 00:57

Mine just take coins in their pocket. He won't need much. Find out what the prices will be in advance. mine take £1.

I'm not sure if the Cath Kits on is a bit girlie. We are a very gender unspecific household but some of the other boys are keen to tease.

I had considered just having coins in pocket but I expect he'd lose his money pretty quickly that way.

He is so looking forward to his first disco.

What about a wrist wallet? They don't seem as easy to find as when I was that age, the 80s ;). But Amazon have a few. You could tell him that all th super heroes wear them, it has that look about it :)

Tidypidy · 14/07/2013 06:19

How about one of those old fashioned snap over wallets where you shake the coins into the open half? My 4yo ds has a small plastic zip up purse with a dog on one side. Not much to make fun of with that!

Rhienne · 14/07/2013 06:23

Wallet on a chain attached to his belt or inside his pocket. Either make your own simple zip pouch with cord, or search amazon for "wallet on chain". Eg www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00D04ENVK/ref=mp_s_a_1_7?qid=1373779231&sr=8-7&pi=SL75

I found a brown zip up coin purse for my son the other day...they do exist. Grin.

SneezySnatcher · 14/07/2013 07:42

The boys at my school usually take theirs in a plastic money bag or envelope. They have their name on it so it can be handed back when they (inevitably) lose it. Neither stylish nor beautiful though!

MirandaWest · 14/07/2013 07:44

Just make sure he has shorts/trousers with a zip up pocket and he'll be fine

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 14/07/2013 07:45

One of those tubes that go on a string around neck, like you might find on holiday?

Purses are out there that a boy would use. My 6 year old ds has one from the science museum and a Barcelona FC one. Tbf though he perfectly happily used to take a pink spotty one in to school!

Batman wallet
skylanders wallet
George Pig wallet
Angry birds coin purse
Wrist purse by trunki

SoTiredAgain · 14/07/2013 08:08

He's 4. Put it in a small brown envelope with his name on the envelope.

Noseynoonoo · 14/07/2013 08:17

Thanks. There are some great ideas here.

My boys (aged 9 and almost 11) have small fabric wallets with a zip pocket for change. These fit easily in their trouser pocket.

happyreindeer · 14/07/2013 19:03

Cargo trousers.

XiCi · 14/07/2013 19:54

Surely he is more likely to lose a purse than coins in his pocket!

XiCi · 14/07/2013 19:56

Or if dd is going to be there with a bag why can't she carry some extra money for him?

Noseynoonoo · 14/07/2013 23:03

Well, I found a little purse for him today. I have stuck a name sticker on the outside and on the inside.

I expect he will lose it though.

Letting his DSis take care of the money is the more sensible option, but the school see the exercise of having money to take care of, and to purchase items as a worthwhile exercise in itself. I think it will end in tears.

Actually, first time DD went, she lost her purse too but she had managed to spend every penny by then!

Managing money exercise at 4? Way to ruin a disco. There's plenty of time for that when they are older.

Not you, OP, I know it is the school.

Noseynoonoo · 15/07/2013 10:03

Totally agree - the staff spend most of their time searching for lost purses by all accounts.

I would have much preferred it if the price of the disco included the food and drink.

MirandaWest · 15/07/2013 10:18

At my DCs discos you pay an entrance fee which includes drinks and a packet of crisps. There is also a tuck shop at the end of the KS1 disco and throughout the KS2 disco which you obviously pay extra for. With the KS1 children you could bring some money for the tuck shop and give it to them when you pick it up at the end if you wanted which is easier all ways round I think.

Have never really thought about what DS does with his money - I give him some and lots of sweets come back. Suppose he must put it in a pocket. DD has a little purse on a string type thing or maybe an ordinary purse.
Slightly concerned I can't remember what she does Grin
