The big dress size conspiracy.....

Northerner · 06/06/2006 13:42

I never normally shop in Next, but yesterday saw a lovely dress for a wedding I am going to. So I tried on a 10 (my normal size) and it was HUGE.

The 8 fitted, but even that was a little roomy.

I normally shop in Topshop, Oasis, bay trading, New Look and am always a 10.

So ovbiously, Next make there sizes bigger to amke us feel better, or is it the other shops make them smaller.

What is going on?!!!!

keep going to next

Feistybird · 06/06/2006 13:45

yes, I reckon they're trying to appease their customers by making their sizes roomier.

TinyGang · 06/06/2006 13:45

You can now say you are a size 8 thenSmile

That kind of psychology works for me!Grin It's those shops that go in the other direction that get me down.

Hidingbehindabook · 06/06/2006 13:45

They are all doing it. I am a size smaller than when i was a teenager, despite weighing exactly the same and having a thicker waist since two pregnancies. The real mystery is - why is it so important to us? Why do we get such a boost from being a samller size? That's why the shops do it...

PrettyCandles · 06/06/2006 13:46

Try Monsoon as well, if you want to buy one or two sizes down from your usual Wink.

threelittlebabies · 06/06/2006 13:46

PLEASE don't tell me that! Don't want to think about what it means for me! Grin

Northerner · 06/06/2006 13:47

Yeah but Next is a bit 'mumsy' IMO.

Would much rather be a Topshop size 8!!

I take a 10 in Next jeans when I know I'm really a 12.
Similar culprits are M&S - even their 8 tops don't fit my petite norks properly but I think this is due to a more generous cutting style (ie nothing's tight); and Gap where I take a US 6 (ie a UK 10) too.

All this is balanced out by Zara, where I always need at least a medium, and normally an extra large in jumpers etc...

moondog · 06/06/2006 13:57

I'm a 12 but have two tops from Next, one in a 12 and one a 14 and the latter is the smallest.
Go figure...

Mercy · 06/06/2006 14:23

M&S are guilty of doing this, also Boden and many other shops. That's why size 6 clothes are more widely available now. Which annoys me because I was a 'proper' size 6 or 8 before and now even they are a bit too big for me in some shops.

Gap seem to have stayed pretty consistent though.

M&S trousers are definitely wrong - I'm 5'10 with fairly long legs and long is far too long for me unless I'm planning on only wearing vv high shoes. Seem to remember being extralong at one time, and I haven't started shrinking just yet.
The length of tops and swimsuits really gets me - why not have different lengths there? I end up buying tops that are too big so they are a bit longer Angry
