is it worth paying out on the more pricey stuff?
i was thinking of trying either mac or bobbi brown

i like eyeliner, mascara, bronzer on the cheeks and a brownish/nude lipgloss

and normally get loreal, maybeline, rimmel number 7 level type cosmetics
and and ive not really worn much make up for quite a while, but ive decided to make more of an effort
so really i need a whole new make up bag

Everyone always says you can go cheap with lipstick but I have never found a decent cheap lippie? Recs anyone?

Rimmel released a range of Kate (as in Moss) lipsticks a while ago. They are as very, very nearly as good as my Chanel and Bobbi Brown lipsticks but are a third of the price.

Revlon lip butters are getting good reviews but I find they have no staying power at all and they bleed a bit so you need a lip pencil which is a faff. Good for a hint of colour when ordinary lipstick would be too much though and cheap enough you can buy a bright, on trend colour, to liven up your everyday make up without feeling you need to keep it come the autumn.

I've been using Rimmel Kate Moss No 3 for a while- love the colour but the perfume makes my lips peel.
I have just bought a No 7 one in Divine which is same colour and no perfume.
I can't use BB lipsticks- something in them chaps my lips.

I buy only bobbi brown, but I don't have much make up. So rather than having a big make up bag with loads of different brands and buying bits and pieces here and there, a few years ago I chucked it all out and spent time with bb putting together the right make up and colours. I now only replace (checking the colour still works) when I need to. I feel groomed all day long, the colours last, I don't have tons of clutter, and although it's expensive I am sure I spend a lot less than ever before.

I really think its a case of trying things out until you find products that suit you. Sorry, I know thats not what you want to hear Grin

I like some high end stuff: Nars illuminator, Nars Bronzer, Estee Lauder foundation, YSL concealer, Clinique lip colour / balm.

But there are loads of products I buy more cheaply, and that is after trying many high end aternatives (bit of a beauty junkie): Loreal mascara, Rimmel lip and eye liners, Bourjois eye shadows to name a few.

Agree that websites with recommendations / reviews can be helpful (MN great, too!), and trying out samples of things is always beneficial. I get a Glossybox beauty box every month and its a good way of trying out new products.

L'oreal is good for lip sticks imo.

I think Bourjois is a good drug store brand. Their eueshadows and blushers imo are excellent

I have lots some mac makeup and generally I love it. The only bits I'm not so keen on is the mascara (as a previous poster said) and the cover up.

I mix and match.

I think more expensive foundation brands are better and if I was rich I'd probably just keep buying Bare Minerals, but I just can't justify it right now so I'll wait and ask for a set for Christmas.

For mid-range, I really rate Urban Decay for eyeliners and eyeshadows - I actually think their eyeshadows are better than Mac's, as they go on more smoothly.

For blusher, Benetint is my absolute favourite but the Soap and Glory powder blush and Max Factor creme blush are not bad.

For eyeliner, L'ancome Definicils is vastly superior to anything else I've tried, but Max Factor is fine when counting the pennies more.

For lipstick, I liked Une but they have disappeared. The S&G ones are good too.

Oh and Revlon nail varnishes beat Chanel (for example) hands down.

I mix and match, but I admit I tend to go for high-end. I will always buy a high end foundation so I can be colour matched - I have wasted so much money buying foundation from Rimmel or whatever. I'm not so bothered about mascara etc, in fact, I'm using a £1.99 Sporty Girl mascara at the moment which is brilliant.

I'm enjoying my Clinique CC cream at the moment, it's not as heavy as a foundation and feels and looks gorgeous on. I've just ordered Smashbox Heatwave eyeshadow palette - can't wait to try it! I also love Urban Decay eyeshadows - agree with Remus, I prefer them to Mac anyday.

Apparently, Chanel is the big sister of Une, Une is the big sister of Bourjois so if you find something from Chanel, chances are Bourjois will have something similar.

I have sensitive skin and easily irritated eyes due to rosacea and have had the most luck with Clinique makeup (the same does not apply to their skincare though). I use their foundation, mascara (although I have also found non irritating mascaras from Rimmel and No.7 too) and eyeliner - Cream Shaper for eyes seems most hypo-allergenic and goes on very smoothly. I don't tend to bother with lippy any more and just use balms but I always found Bourjois good - agree some cheap lipsticks taste vile.

hi everyone, thanks for your replies, well I went to town today and had a makeover from one of the ladies on the beauty counters
it was guerlain counter

she did the works on me and it was a really nice treatSmile
moisturiser, bronzing cream and powder
eye shadow and lip liner base and lipstick

it wasa sort of orange blossom fragrance

I think I will treat myself to the moisturiser its guerlain suoerlight aqua serum
and I think I might treatmyself to the fragrance too

I am going to try the mac and bobbi brown ones first though before slurging on eyeshadow or lipstciks/gloss

I wasn't really planning on doing it today, just the makeuplady saw my trying stuff and asked if I wanted to be shown how to apply it properly
so I said oh ok then
then got the works

bit of a shame im off to the pool tonight after school really!

mind you dh won't notice, unless I t was bright red lipstick or something

but im definatley treating myself

I would say it depends what item it is. I personally would stick to my Avon eyeliners more than say Estee Lauder ones I've tried in the past.
