Anyone got some lovely tales to share?

I've had a browse online and it's very hard to know who is reputable and who isn't. Ideally I'd like a London showroom as a back up to see if they are bona fide.

I already know about Samara James and have mixed views on them, so any others welcome.

Blue Nile is good!

Oh and just in case anyone knows anything I'd like an oval solitaire set across the band ( side to side) in a rub over or half rub over setting.

I'd never buy an opal online.... there's such a massive variation on them that I'm nearly always disappointed.

I have bought some uncut opals online before through ebay and the marks/colours etc are always described/shown in detail (and it can still be hit or miss what you actually get.) but when you buy opal jewellery online through a retailer the emphasis tends to be on the whole piece rather than the opal itself so you have no idea really.

I'd go to a jewellers and ask for a variety of stones to view before getting it set. Do you have a particular colour/variety of opal in mind?

What you're asking for is fairly specific so I would recommend getting it commissioned.

If you're in Scotland I can recommend a couple of places.

I quite like the look of 77 Diamonds if anyone has any experiences.

Also- if you had to choose between colour and cut which would you go for?

There's a lot of difference in price obviously. I'm looking at around .7 carat, but would you go for SI, VS1, VS2, and which colour- lower than D and how low?

I said OVAL not opal :)

Oh sorry! Lol. I have opals on my mind today!

I'd go for cut as colour can be comprimised if it's a really good cut. But it depends what style you like. Modern or antique style cuts? Antique style you can be a bit more lax with the colour as there tends to be more facets to reflect light etc.

In general, I wouldn't go below a D but I am a snob. There are always exceptions to the rule though and you might get something fab that I wouldn't have considered.

Blue Nile +1

We got my engagement ring from Diamond Geezer. The name doesn't inspire confidence but it was brilliant. I went to hatton gardens first and didn't enjoy it at all - I wanted an emerald cut diamond and there were mostly brilliant cut solitaires on show. Most of the jewellers have a few loose stones and then print-outs of the details of thousands more diamonds which they can order. But you can't actually see them all anyway and I felt rushed to consider the trade-offs between the 4 C's. so I ended up doing online research on stones and then we took the plunge. Diamonds are a commodity anyway and as long as they are properly certified by one of the reputable authorities (can't remember the names now but there are two main ones iirc) then you should get what you expect.

I am not sure whether Diamond Geezers has exactly the setting that you would want but they have a lot to choise from. They also have details of thousands of stones - they don't stock them but catalogue available stones from a lot of suppliers, and can then get the one you choose (so they don't have the cost of carrying stock, iyswim). You can take your time putting in various parameters to trade off, say, cut and colour, and see what it does to your bling. On the DG website you can 'see' what the ring will look like.

I think it took about 3-4 weeks to arrive but was actually a bit ahead of the schedule. The ring itself was immaculate. I had a platinum setting with a central emerald cut diamond with two small baguettes on the shoulder. The setting was perfectly done (no wonky claws, heaven forbid). I can't remember how it was packaged because I ripped it off so quickly! You get the original certificate for the stone with it so that is your assurance of what you have bought (you could also get it valued independently but I haven't yet).

Basically though I felt they had lots of choice, a great website so you can search a lot of diamonds and get a view of what the ring would look like (and that was pretty accurate, although you can't get the full sparkle effect on screen!). In spite of my reservations about buying online it was very good experience and much more for our money than the high street. Even if you buy elsewhere I'd recommend the website for a browse and to use the viewer.

As for the trade-off, I think the importance of clarity vs colour depends on the cut. Emerald cuts show inclusions more so I went up on clarity but still went for good colour rather than a huge yellows stone.

Hope that helps, and at least gives you the confidence to go for it. I am delighted with mine!

I've also used Blue Nile, and Purely Diamonds. Both excellent and got miles more than I could have begun to afford on the high street. Personally mine are Es and Fs and have been complemented when I walked in to jewellers

StatisticallyChallenged · 11/07/2013 20:57

this is round rather than oval but is this the sort of style?

missbopeep · 11/07/2013 21:03

Thanks BW- that's all very useful.
I am actually replacing a rather cheap ring so there is no rush!

I have seen one I like on 77, and as they are in London I might try them.

Blue Nile looks good too but they don't have the setting I want- just a claw setting.

I have bought from 77 diamonds, they are entirely trustworthy.

Umicar · 11/07/2013 21:22

They also do custom work I believe. They often post pictures of custom work on their fb page (77 diamonds I mean!)

I have had 3 rings made here, admittedly I provided the stones, but the workmanship is top notch & the people are very enthusiastic & take a real pride in their work.
IfvI lived anywhere near London I would love to have a couple more pieces of work done by them.

Oops, on iPad & have never done a link before.

Thanks- that gives me some confidence and something to look at.

All I need to do now is convince myself that spending silly money on a ring is not silly......
