outfits for little girls

I'm just curious because I've had to buy all new summer clothes for my daughter (5), what kind of outfits do you put your girls in?

I've bought a few tshirt type dresses which look pretty but are casual enough to play in aswel hopefuly. I'm finding a lot of little girls shorts are verging on hot pants, got one denim pair that are ok but still very short.

Suppose I'm just being nosey/looking for inspiration really.

My 6 year old loves dresses so we mainly buy cotton sun dress types, and she wears them with sandals or flip flops. They at no harder to wash than something more casual, I find. Also little short suits with straps are good.Boden are good for smarter shorts, and John Lewis for everything else.

My almost 4 year old hates dresses and is usually in shorts or leggings and t-shirt. She also has a couple of pairs of cotton trousers (jojo maman, few years old) and cotton blouse/ top things. And I got her a cotton skirt the other day in a jumble that she's happy with.

All the above worn with wellies...

Cotton sundresses from H and M - loads of colours and about £4 I think. Worn with leggings and a cardigan when cooler.

Sometimes shorts or leggings and a t shirt. DD is quite fussy and doesn't like what she calls itchy or twisty or titchy clothes so simple pull on dresses seem to suit us both.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'm struggling this year because previous years she's been a bit tomboy but now only wants girly girl. She doesn't want to look babyish and I don't want her too grown up. Ahhh girls.

I was also about to recommended the h&m dresses. They really are great quality.

I got some shorts in next which aren't too short. Otherwise leggings and tshirts.

OohMrDarcy · 10/07/2013 21:40

Have just looked on H&M online for these mythical dresses.... are these them? www.hm.com/gb/product/12521?article=12521-A#article=12521-A

because if they are nice on.... 2.99!!! for a dress for a 6 year old!!! Shock Grin will be buying!

xTillyx · 10/07/2013 21:50

The h&m dresses are fab, but my DD is a bit in between the 4-6 and the 6-8 at the minute. I did buy a 6-8 tshirt dress the other day though. I'll maybe get a couple of 4-6 with leggings so they're like tunics.

My DD1 is 2.9. But wears 4-6. I have got her a load of H&M dresses. They swish which is what she likes. She also has a few play suits/ dungarees, which she also loves.

Got to say that she has worn H&m since birth. Their baby range goes between traditional sizes, (0-1,2-4,4-6 all months) and everything seems to wash really well. Everything apart from their cream t-shirts (dirty white colour) and their coloured trousers seem to fade a lot quicker. But for the price paid, the wear everything gets, and how long they last (a friend has a hand me down that is still going strong, 2 babies and 2 years later), they can not be beat.

3MonthMaid · 10/07/2013 22:37

DD is 6 and lives in dresses usually. She likes to wear leggings under them though. We also get a lot in h&m and its another thumbs up from us for the 2.99 dresses Grin

Her new thing is playsuits, or jumpsuits really as she likes the long ones. Next do some decent stuff.

I'm struggling a bit as a lot of the girls ranges go up to 5-6, after which you seem to be meant to dress your child like a mini-ho Hmm

She wears sandals, converse or toms on her feet and has a couple of the towelling boden hoodys which are excellent too.

M&S, Boden, H&M and next do some decent stuff still.

Tw1nkle · 10/07/2013 22:40

I make a lot of my DD's clothes myself - she loves it as she gets to look at photo's and choose what she likes - she sometimes comes with me a chooses the fabric too - that can be interesting!
DD is 4, and loves twirly skirts! Good job I love making them too!

Nicknamegrief · 10/07/2013 22:41

My tall three year old is wearing lightweight gap joggers (12-18ms) as cropped trousers.

She dug them out when I was sorting out clothes for the baby. I am tempted to go and buy some more.

OohMrDarcy · 11/07/2013 07:34

3MM

DD is in 6-7 and I do really sstruggle to find age appropriate clothes, but there are normally a few bits in each place that are nice, not too babyish, but non ho-like!

Ashoething · 11/07/2013 08:51

Another vote for h&m. Ddd has 4 dresses from last year still going strong and I bought 4 more-some of them are reduced to £2! Sainsburys also have some pretty dresses for little girls. I hate Next-think their stuff is poor quality and some of it is not age appropriate.

xTillyx · 11/07/2013 11:37

My issue with Next (even though I do buy a lot from there) is that the 'older girls' is 3-16 years. There are some lovely things in there, but some of it is too grown up. I like that M&S do younger, older and then teens.

OP posts:
xTillyx · 11/07/2013 11:38

Oh and yes, forgot about Sainsburys will have to have a look.

Zara has a few nice pieces.
Another vote here for h&m!
Debenhams
Sainsburys
Asda
Tesco
M&S
Primark
Tkmaxx
I shop around and buy nice bits here, there and everywhere.

Betty5313 · 11/07/2013 22:32

Another vote for h and m! my tall 3 yr old is in 4-5 clothes so heading out of the toddler type stuff in a lot of shops, h and m do plenty of age appropriate stuff that she can move around in freely. Also like asda. I buy her boys trousers if the girl ones are all too skinny! leggings and t shirt dresses are a hit, easy to wear and last year's dresses get used with leggings for another year. I also make and knit a fair bit.
