a ball gown Wink

I am going to a ball on Friday night:) I would go for a full length dress(ankle length at least). Monsoon have some really nice ones. If it's a summer ball I avoid a black dress. Not too full and not too bridesmaidy. Not sure if that helps :)

Thanks. Will look in Monsoon. Just wasn't sure length so that has helped! DOn't want black either

Not sure I can afford Monsoon prices - just looked on line. Anyone know where can get cheaper but similar alternatives?

ooh, I'm going to a ball on Friday night too Medulla - wonder if it's the same one??

Would usually advise long (looks better anyway), but you might get away with a prom-type dress in an eveningy fabric if the event's not that formal. Would suggest \link{http://www.coast-stores.co.uk/site.htm\Coast} for this but is same price range as Monsoon.
A corset/bustier type top and long skirt can also work if you've got the cleavage for it - I'd avoid long and full though as can make you look like a lost bridesmaid. I also avoid prints (esp flowers) for evening but appreciate this is a personal preference!

Debenhams is worth a look as they occasionally have an utter gem, ditto TKMaxx, and if you happen to be anywhere near Bicester there's a Monsoon outlet shop there where you might strike it lucky.

I have three Monsoon ball dresses and wear them in rotation with different accesories- two were in sales, and the other was in fact my sister's school leavers' ball dress so is v old - they do last if you don't wear them often and get them cleaned carefully.

Try on a dress in your local Monsoon to discover what size you need then have a root round eBay, or try charity shops or dress agencies - because evening wear is worn so lightly, secondhand stuff is normally in very good condition. Some places also hire out dresses if you know there's no way you'll wear it again.

Thanks Mrs Badger. I am having a look on line at the mo. Some of the monsoon ones look lovely but I am just worried I will only wear it once. Unless they are fairly classic and timeless then by the next time I go out somewhere posh will be out of fashion!

classic and timeless is the best sort of outfit!

The Monsoon ones often are classic if you avoid the obvious this-season trends (prom shape, ethnic embroidery) - means they never look bang up to the minute trendy but never look Out either.
Mine are all absolutely plain bias-cut satin (silver, purple and blue) with different necklines.

flowertot · 07/06/2006 12:41

Good plan. Of course I love the beady ethnic ones, but better to go for classic. Going to Monsoon wit friend tomorrow so fingers crossed will find something nice
