Rash on my jawline that gets worse when I eat sugary food...

Any ideas please on what this can be?

I've had a rash on my jawline on & off for years.

I've recently been following a low carb/low sugar diet & noticed that my skin improved a lot.

However at the slightest sign of me consuming biscuits any sugar at all now the rash gets worse, starts itching & seems to be more inflamed. It also happens when I have a glass or two of wine - particularly red wine

I saw my GP about it ages ago & he prescribed hydrocortizone but I didn't carry on using it as it didn't really help, the packaging said NOT to be used on face & I got pregnant.

Please help me identify what this could be & how I can help my poor face - I'm being driven to distraction!

TIA

Have you tried bog standard anti hystamine cream/tablets ?

HavingAnOffDAy · 04/07/2013 13:42

No - I probably should shouldn't I?

I didn't even think of that Blush

It's hormonal - i.e., insulin. I get carbunkles on my jawline when I eat sweets.

I had a cupcake at the weekend, today I'm chasing off two zits. I'm 39.

It could be a candida thing if sugar is a trigger (candida is also linked to eczema). Many antifungal creams aren't recommended in pregnancy, talk to your GP or the pharmacist.

Although the red wine thing does make it sounds like allergies as valium said - I'm allergic to the sulfites in red wine, it makes me come out in a delightful red rash. You may find you get the same thing from non-smoked/cured pork products (eg gammon) as a similar sulfite is used. If you're pregnant there aren't many anti-histamines you can take, talk to your GP (they usually say piriton but there are also topical ones you can get that are safer in pregnancy).

Oh, I'm not pregnant now - DS is 2 but this rash has flared up again recently & I'm desperate to get rid of it

I'm off to steal DH's antihistamines now Grin

If they don't work I'll try the pharmacist

Thanks Thanks

This is really interesting, - I get hormonal lumps and bumps, - behind ears, a the nape of my neck, under jawline, but I always thought they were just monthly triggered not food triggered too.

I also get monthly joint pain and neuralgia type hurtings - would be great if I could just cut something out to CUT IT OUT!!

DolomitesDonkey · 04/07/2013 14:06

Yep. :( Thing is, I can ignore a slight tightening of my jeans, or a crappy time on the treadmill or a slow nudge upwards of the scales. But my skin lets me know I've been eating shite.

I've just had a 5" chunk of cucumber and now I'm off to run 5k but would rather sit on my arse and have ben and jerry's.

DolomitesDonkey · 04/07/2013 14:07

Although - and you will think I'm bonkers - I recently participated in trials for the prevention of diabetes type II through acupuncture. I had 4 sessions and no zits for nearly 6 weeks...

I used to have a rash on my jawline, and no creams could make it go away completely. I have no idea if it was connected to sugary foods tbf.

My doctor and one specialist told me there was nothing to do with this big red scaly itchy rash and I just had to learn to live with it. I had allergy tests to see if it was caused by makeup, skincare or anything else - but nothing other than a reaction to the tape they put on my skin

Went to another specialist, got some treatment (light of some kind if i remember correctly), and it went away. It's been probably 8-10 years since I had it, and it's not come back.

ADifferentKindOfMum · 04/07/2013 15:36

It is peri-oral dermatitis. Sugar coffee and alcohol flares it.
I've had it for a year and gave just done a month of antibiotics. Gone now but my gp said expect a reoccurence in your lifetime. Common in females, nobody knows the true cause. Steroid cream makes it worse not better.

HavingAnOffDAy · 04/07/2013 19:37

That makes sense about the coffee too. I'll have a read about it & book a GP appointment - thanks Smile

When I first low carbed I have up coffee. Now I'm drinking more & its definitely worse.

I have the same. Not triggered by sugar, but maybe by something I’m allergic to. Doctors can’t figure out what the rash is. I also get red skin from red wine. I cannot drink it. Have you found out anything?

ZazieTheBruce · 19/04/2019 09:24

I get that. Generally speaking, I don’t have sugary things or alcohol in my regular diet.

Also take probiotics daily (Lactobacillus plantarum). They mean I get away with the odd one off pudding or glass of wine, as long as it is just an occasional thing. I found that really helps, as it means I don’t have to think “never ever again” and feel deprived if I go to a party.

Deathraystare · 19/04/2019 11:18

I have diabetes 2 and get lots of little pimple things on my hands of all places if I eat anything sugary. They are hard and sore but itchy.
