I need help. Am moving to the Gulf shortly, to a country that isn't especially strict so I don't need the full head to toe covering but I do need to dress respectfully, ie no bare legs/shoulders/midriff/cleavage while still allowing myself not to die of heat exhaustion.

Problem is that all I can find in the shops is either so fantastically frumpy I can't bring myself to buy it or just slightly inappropriate. Where should I look? Any suggestions?? I get hardly anytime to look round shops so need suggestions to maximise time!

What about some wide linen trousers and some white shirts? which you can funk up with wedgey shoes and chunky jewellery. Great Plains and fcuk had all of that sort of thing going on.

I'm a bit short for widelegs but def an idea (am 5.4 if I stretch and skinny.)

Anyone any other suggestions?

monsoon maybe?

Check out White stuff - I am 5.3 and generally a size 10 - sometimes an 8 - and although i have to wear heels or shorten them their trousers are georgous - the nicest I've ever had. I have two pairs of linens from them this season. They are modesst but def not frumpy.

Agree linen or linen mix(less creases). M and S and Next have some skirts and loose trousers in various lengths, fabric mixes and prices - online too. Neutral colours which you could dress up with cotton tops and blouses. The Gulf states do have many of the UK based shops like M and S, Next and Debenhams.

Im about your height Next petites work out to about the right length & have linen trousers, abound had long linen skirts. Lots of gypsy skirts about like the 70 type you just wash & screw up (great for packing!)

meowmix · 02/06/2006 16:45

looks like I'm wearing linen for the foreseeable!

has anyone bought shirts from TM LEwin or similar/city style shirts? thought about them as an option today but was put off by braying man in braces...

have one Lewin's Fitted shirt that I keep for best best work things (work normally v casual) and they are well fitted and made but I find the shops intimidating too - I tried on my sis's to check the size and got it online.
They have really nicely shaped tails so I never tuck mine in even when I'm being formal.
Some of their colours are a bit suspect - or perhaps I'm just conservative. Also wish they did a 3/4 sleeve option.

meowmix · 05/06/2006 13:22

Just tried again and even tho they have women's shirts in the window I couldn't find them in the shop, and ran out scared of braying man+braces again. Maybe its not meant to be.

Colours are a bit shouty vibrant too. Maybe proper City girls like a bit of acid colour and clashing stripes....
