Barbour jackets/ coats....experiences and opinions

Im talking not about the quilted Barbour International ones but the olive green longer ones. What is general opinion. I have to say I have been put off by the prevalence of the the quilted ones amongst my school run crowd BUT now that I am moving out of the country, and thus this won't be a problem, I find myself attracted to the more some of the other styles. They cost a lot though so I am wondering if they are worth it. I'm 5'4" and between a size 14-16. Do they fit true to size? Are they useful or just heavy and impractical?

If you mean the traditional waxed cotton ones, I love mine. I have two, one a Beaufort (slightly lighter weight) and a men's Northumbria that I wear in the proper cold weather. Both second hand (the latter an eBay bargain) and ancient, slightly coming apart here and there but very wearable. I've rewaxed them both (a tin does two and costs about £8) and Barbour will also do it and other repairs. If you were buying a new one it would last for years. I'm a size 12 5'5" mine are a 36 and 38", although the 38" is big, I can get a couple of jumpers under it.

This sounds like a sales pitch, promise I don't work for them!

No secretsix that is useful information. Where I am moving it will be rainy but not very cold so probably the lighter weight would be better. Thanks very much.

I have two of the waxed type, one is 23 years old and the other(I think its called a flyweight and is v light ) about 15 years old.

I've have the heavier one reproofed once. I live in the country and have certainly had my money's worth from the coats, I do have lighter gore text waterproof coats but the Barbour is the one I go back to most often.

DH has a Northumbria which is probably 30 years old and its still in perfect condition.

I've got three waxed Barbour jackets in different weights & styles. I wear one most days & love them. They get more character with age & become individual to you.
Well worth the money imo.

I love them (I even have a quilted one that I love the most) and have just added this to my collection. I find the ladies come up a bit snug.

I have one and love it. I live in the country though so it is probably a cliche but I don't care. I've had it 24 years (just scared myself working that out, I must have got old while I wasn't looking, how did that happen?!) and it's been re-proofed a couple of times, still does the job and I definitely agree that the lines and wrinkles of age give it character! Mine is a Beaufort, can't read the size label any more (sorry) but they tend to be roomy.

Health warning:this is a practical opinion not a fashion opinion!
