Not a big fan of M & S but today I happened to be in a shopping centre that has one of their flagship stores in it so I thought I would go in to have a look at their clothes.

Looked round and I was confronted with wall to wall 50 shades of beige. It was everywhere only spaced out with the occasional flash of white and splodge of black. Clothes on the racks were a bundle of size 8,s and 22's neither of which I am and even in the linen section they didn't have black linen trousers(not that really wanted any but wanted to test their quality) the underwear on the other hand was a range of fancy leopard prints and fluorescent coloured bras to go under the beige tops and trousers. Shoes were what I would call stripper shoes with heels and platforms and few sandals or flip flops that I am sure I have bought from their before.

I walked out without buying anything despite being right in the M & S demographic. I feel rather let down and very disappointed. I thought they were changing their designers and updating their ranges. But when?

I rarely shop there now apart from the bog standard T shirts which I wear under my uniform at work.
It seems strange re the beige. All the other shops have fantastic colours this summer.

In for the autumn

slalomsuki · 26/06/2013 21:13

I went to Frasers afterwards and it was wall to wall colour. Bought a couple of things from there which are lovely and not beige.

I like their shoes, but agree with you on the clothes front.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 26/06/2013 21:20

I went in one of the big M&S stores on Saturday, bought jeans, bras, knickers and school uniform. I had a good wander round but nothing else at all even caught my eye, it seemed to be wall to wall dull and frumpy. I didn't particularly pick up on the beige though. Was pleased to note a significant expansion in the beauty section, more brands and ranges.

lissieloo · 26/06/2013 21:24

I still like their underwear, and agree about their make up.

lissieloo · 26/06/2013 21:29

I found these today when I was writing a blog post. I don't know how they can get the shoes right and the clothes so wrong

SingingSilver · 26/06/2013 21:36

I only go in for bras, knickers and tights.

M&S clothes range isn't aimed at women under 70 though is it? If it is then they are doing something hugely wrong. Frumpy and uninspiring is all I can say. The only time I go in there is for the food hall or pjs for the dc at christmas. I don't even think the shoes are nice!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 26/06/2013 21:49

The shoes vary a lot. I do buy them there sometimes as I have very wide feet, but some of them are jaw droppingly frumpy, some of them are close to being nice but somehow miss the mark and then there is the odd gem hidden amongst them.

CointreauVersial · 26/06/2013 23:47

I like M&S (lone voice in the wilderness), particularly Autograph, lingerie and shoes. It's not all good, but then again, no shop is.

Ifancyashandy · 26/06/2013 23:52

I buy their 3 for £8 cotton strappy vests to go under sheer tops. I have gone through hundred of the buggers in every colour.

Those and their grapefruit and ginger candle. And that's it (bar food).

Don't even buy tights, socks or lingerie in there anymore.

Fools. I've got money to burn! Grin

Startail · 27/06/2013 00:07

No beige in ours.

I want a beige cardigan.

Actually not much of anything as the builders were in.

ouryve · 27/06/2013 00:08

I suggested in the MN census that M&S really need to work with MN.

thecatfromjapan · 27/06/2013 00:13

Me too, Cointreau.

Their Beauty section is great, too.

I just bought a lovely, yellow, cashmere cardigan in my local M and S, in a sale, for about £15. It's so 1950's-style and pretty.

And they have those nice, Bobble water bottles too.

OverAndAbove · 27/06/2013 07:00

I noticed this size thing the other day when I was in M and S; everything was either an 8 or a 22. They did have some quite nice bright coloured beach wear though so not all beige in ours yet!

Bunbaker · 27/06/2013 07:04

The last few times I have bought chain store clothes they have been from BHS who seem to get it right for the basics. Plus their prices are easier on the pocket.

Badvoc · 27/06/2013 07:04

Those shoes are gorgeous lissie!

lissieloo · 27/06/2013 09:20

Badvoc, aren't they! I am trying to convince myself that I Don't Need More Shoes.

I am failing.

They have some great colour block sandals too, and loafers, and wedges.

Badvoc · 27/06/2013 10:42

Buy them

lissieloo · 27/06/2013 10:50

You temptress Grin I may accidentally pop into M&S next week when DH gets paid, after all, they'd be an investment, right?

Badvoc · 27/06/2013 12:32

Exactly.
Sometimes you ahem to spend money to save money :)

lissieloo · 27/06/2013 12:40

and price per wear would soon be down to pennies....

Badvoc · 27/06/2013 12:43
