Home hair dye help

I used to get my hair highlighted regularly, but money is a bit tight at the minute and I can't really justify the expense.

My hair is mid-brown, shoulder length, lighter at the ends where my old highlights are growing out (it's been over a year since I last had it done).

I am going to a wedding at the weekend and am feeling a bit drab - I was wondering if there are any DIY highlight kits that give good results? Or is it too risky? I have only used a dye at home once before and it was a bit of a disaster - my hair turned an alarming peachy colour and required millions of washes to go back to normal. It was a Garnier nutrisse dye but I can't remember the exact shade...

Thanks!

I wouldn't do highlights at home no matter how good just because it would be really hard to make sure they are even etc a good dye is loreal I do my mums every six weeks with this and she is always being complimented but they can come out on the darker side of what you want so go for a shade lighter maybe?

Hmm, sounds tricky! I don't want to end up with uneven stripes!

Agree with Tilpil, too difficult to do yourself and too risky if it doesn't turn out as you hoped it would.

Have you a hairdressing college near you where final year students practice on 'real people'? They usually have very reasonable rates and are closely supervised whilst they work. Only downside is that it can take a lot longer than in a salon.
