Home hair colouring virgin, help!!

I have my hair coloured every 5 weeks at the hairdressers - I am a mid to dark brown hair colour and have chocolate brown put on it. I like it a bit darker but also I have to hide the grey roots.

Anyway, I am going away next week - I don't want to have it done before I go because the sun fades it so much that as soon as I am back I will want it done again. So, I have bought a home colour. I bought Garnier.

I know this sounds so stupid, but I have never done my own before and I am really nervous incase it all turns out wrong! I just want to hide the grey and maybe give the all over colour a bit of life and make it a bit darker.

Please tell me it will be ok. I am going to do it mid week. I've done a patch test already. Will it be ok? What should I do to make sure its done properly? If it does turn out ok that will also stop me having to pay a stupid amount of money every few weeks because I will be able to do my own.

Ok the most important part is done that's the patch test.

Read the leaflet-seriously some me people don't.
Make sure you use the gloves.
Shake really well to make sure its all mixed together.
Put it on the roots first and then the mid lenghts and ends for the last few minutes (it should say on the instructions when to run through to the ends)
Once the color is on have some wet tissue/cotton wool and go around the hairline to get it off your skin/ears.
When you rinse it off add a little water, turn off the tap and using your fingertips rub the color back into your scalp/hair.This is the best way to stop staining and lift the color off your scalp.
Good luck!

Give yourself time to read instructions through at least twice and use plenty of baseline around hairline and tops of ears to prevent staining. Also protect your bathroom as much as possible with binbags/.sheet, that stuff stains everything!

Vaseline not baseline Grin

Oh thank you ItsintheBag, so glad somebody that knows what they are doing came along!

The instructions are confusing me - it has different instructions - one for just touching up roots and different ones for doing it all. The thing is, I am just trying to cover the roots really but I doubt it will be the same shade as the one my hairdresser uses, so I dont want to just do the routes I want to do it all over incase it looks different. But it says not to do it for as long all over!

How do I make sure I get all the roots, not just my parting? Do I rub it in like shampoo all over the top of my hair?

Thanks for the tip about rubbing it off my scalp/hair to stop the staining.

There should be a diagram for putting it on in the pack,I will have a google in a minute.
Start around your hairline front to back, make a middle parting and put it down the middle. Then taking small sections apply it from front to back.

It would be good to have a spare pair of hands for the back, but just take your time.
Apply just to the root to start, half way thru the developing time, apply the rest of the tint to mid lenghts and ends.
It does not need to be on as long on the midlenghts and ends , as the hair is pourous so develops faster.

Roots not routes!

Oh good idea about the vaseline, I will do that too, thank you.

Here is a video, might help.Just don't run it through to the ends till near the end/half way thru as per the instructions.

As the other posters have said also if your hair is past shoulder length you will need 2 boxes to cover your hair .

RichTeaAreCrap · 24/06/2013 10:08

Thanks everyone so much. I will be attempting this week! Fingers crossed.
