Perfume for an 18 yo?

Any ideas?

She has Lady Million already. So likes that kind of thing.

She is quite sophisticated in that a "celebrity" scent won't suit, so no Beyonce, J-Lo, Jusin Beiber type stuff. She is very fashion conscious, has a personal shopper in Topshop 4 times a year and only wears Mac make-up.

Don't judge, not my child, mum has suggested this is what I buy for her 18th birthday. Help! TIA.

At that age my dd used to love '8' by Abercrombie & Fitch. It's young, a bit different, fresh.

DowntonTrout · 19/06/2013 09:12

She flirted with the Jack Wills look for a while but has never gone down the Abercrombie/Hollister route.

She probably wants something aimed at a stylish 20 something. The brand is more important than the smell IYKWIM.

Not that Lady Million is über stylish (I don't think) but it seems to be what all the youngsters (I say that as a 40+) are buying.

See by Chloe? It's not my thing, but might suit her. Read some interview with Cara Delevingne who was raving about it.

Lonelynessie · 19/06/2013 10:06

This is quite nice. I also tried a new Dior fragrance in Boots last week that was lovely, but I can't remember the name, sorry. It was lovely though, and definitely by Dior.

Chance by Channel is very youthful and very appropriate for young fashionistas.

I bought it for myself, but after a week realised that as lovely as it was I was too old for it. I gave the bottle to 17 year old niece, and she swooned with excitement.

Its zingy sister fragrance Chance Eau Fraiche would also be great for summer.

Alien?

Candy?

TWinklyLittleStar · 19/06/2013 12:55

Stylish 16 year old niece likes Gucci Flora, it's a nice light perfume and Gucci usually goes down well.

MinesaBottle · 19/06/2013 13:12

La Petite Robe Noire by Guerlain? My friend got it for her 16 year old DD and she loves it. It's quite a 'young' fragrance but sophisticated too. None of her friends have anything like it and she won't tell them what it is Grin

LulaPalooza · 19/06/2013 13:29

Prada Candy

Anything by Marc Jacobs if she's a bit girly (Dot is particularly cute and you get a free umbrella at the moment from Fragrance Direct with the Dot 50ml)

Armani Diamonds is similar to Lady millionaire but not so sickly

Vibbe · 19/06/2013 14:36

La petite robe noire is very nice - smells of cherries to me. Can get a bit heavy though. I absolutely adore it, but on some days it is close to triggering a migraine.

If it has to be a perfume smelling of cherries, then Escada cherry in the air is a bit more young and not as heavy as the Guerlain one. Might be too sweet though.

How about Valentino's Valentina?
The new Dior Addicts perfumes are quite good too.
Chanel Chance - it's old but absolutely amazing. Most other Chanel perfumes are too granny-like for me.
Victor & Rolf - Flowerbomb is also nice.

The Marc Jacobs perfumes are also quite popular with the young women.

sheeparegorgeous · 19/06/2013 15:04

I was just thinking Victor & Rolf Flowerbomb and Mark Jacob's too. When I was last in duty free they seemed v popular with 20 something's.

DoctorRobert · 19/06/2013 15:48

flowerbomb.

50shadesofmeh · 19/06/2013 15:57

Vivienne Westwood naughty Alice its gorgeous

DowntonTrout · 19/06/2013 17:41

Thanks.

I tested the new Prada Candy and it has some of the same notes as lady Million.

I also tested Flowerbomb and think the EDT version is ok.

Was hoping to find something in a gift set but they only seem to do them at Christmas but going to pop into Harrods tomorrow as they were selling off all their gift sets left over from Xmas last week. Don't think they had either of the above though.

I think a scent is a lovely 18th or 21st birthday present Smile mum bought me Poeme for my 21st, I loved it then and best part of 20 years later still do. if you are planning to spend a fair amount I'd say go for something that suits her personality but not too fashionable so it can be a gift that she can use,as a signature scent. Hope that doesn't sound too crazy!

TiffanyAtBreakfast · 20/06/2013 10:07

I'd recommend Vera Wang. Cute packaging, good brand and young, feminine scents.

daisydoodoo · 20/06/2013 10:12

I was going to ay vera wang too, the princess ones are actually really nice. the packaging is a bit cutsey but fab for an 18yr old.

DowntonTrout · 20/06/2013 10:19

My problem is- I know what I like. These other fragrances just smell sweet, fruity and seem to have a musky background.

So I don't like them! And going round smelling them yesterday I felt a bit sick with all the cherry, black currant, liquorice type things!

It's taking such a punt on what someone else will like isn't it? However, her mum said no to the Ted Baker clutch I was thinking of Shock and steered me towards perfume or Mac makeup (saying she's registered at Mac so I can check up what she uses) which feels a bit as if I'm just stocking her up instead of choosing. "gift". Maybe I'm just over thinking it though.
