Is this dress worth it....

Okay, so I'm trying to invest in some key pieces and look smarter when I return to work. I've seen this dress which I think fits the bill. However I've never spent so much on a dress before and wondered what the general view on it is. I would want to wear it for next few years. I'm 5ft 8, mid blonde hair and size 10/12.

Gawd yes that's gorgeous, and won't date. And Jaeger stuff is great quality. I'd buy that in a shot of I had the figure!

Trills · 17/06/2013 11:28

To me that doesn't look like the sort of dress that you could wear for years without getting bored of it. or feeling that it had dated.

In my mind a dress that you wear for years starts off more "boring" or "classic" than that (less detail, less interestingness about it) but you won't get fed up of it and it won't go out of fashion.

Thank you.

Trills, do you have any examples of what you mean?

I agree with Trills - it's a nice dress, but quite..what's the word I'm looking for, easy to remember? If you wore it for the next few years, it would be obvious it's the same dress, not that many ways to accessorize it differently.
I'd rather go for something more simple, like www.lkbennett.com/clothing/dresses/DRSALEM002POLYESTER

I know, it looks boring, but you can dress it up or down and have a totally new outfit with different accessories.

I really like the dress you linked to, but not sure how you'd ring the changes with it. whereas something like the link above, you could dress up with belts/ cardigan/jacket even different coloured shoes?

Agree with the last few posters, I would invest in something more simple too, LKBennett is a great choice, there are lots of lovely shift dresses reduced on there. Easy to play with jackets/cardigans, scarves, belts and jewellery to make it earn its keep much better than the one you linked would.

I like it and think it will look lovely on you, from your description of yourself.

But if you are looking for classics, I don't think this is the way to go. It is too 'memorable' and there are too many things about it that may date - the collar, the band down the middle of the top, the embroidered fabric. Possibly also the pleats in the skirt.

So, if you want it for now, and maybe for next year, then go for it. But if you're investing in it as something to wear for years to come, then maybe think again. Simple, well cut, plain, and something you can accessorise might be better.

Sorry.
