I work in a Primary 7 class and they are doing a play which involves a wedding scene and so the "bride" is wearing my dress. Seeing her in it makes me wonder how I ever got into it Grin

The pupil does like it and was grateful it wasn't the teachers who is a lot older than me Wink

My Mum wore a mini dress in the 60's so no chance!! I got married in red so it already is an evening dress really, although I doubt I'll ever be small enough to wear it again Sad

acnebride · 30/05/2006 13:01

FioFio my mums was like that. I wanted to wear it when I got married, but it hadn;t been stored properally and had gone a funny yellowly colour.

NomDePlume · 30/05/2006 13:57

FioFio, my Mum's was almost exactly the same as the link you did. My Mum got married in 1979. I think it went to the charity shop in about 1988 (when they separated).

I've kept mine, not because I want DD to wear it when she gets married, but I hate the thought of chucking it out. I've also got my tiara and shoes. I'll deffo offer the tiara to DD as her 'something old', but I'll try not to be offended if she tells me to bog off Wink

Piffle · 30/05/2006 14:00

yes once to a fancy dress party
she went off her rocker at me
fair enough in hindsight
I was 17 and thin enough back then Grin now I could not even my thighs through the veil [grin[

motherinferior · 30/05/2006 14:00

My mum's wedding sari got stolen, but I'd have looked like a white prat Hari Krishna in it.

NomDePlume · 30/05/2006 14:03

Stolen ?! That's awful MI Sad. Stealing someone's wedding dress is pretty damn low.

SaintofGeorgia · 30/05/2006 14:04

Would loved to have worn my mum's but I think it was lost in a house move when I was young.

Still have mine (after 17 yrs) and still consider dying it, but it is ivory and I am cautious of how it would take a colour. It is a very plain and simple dress, 3/4 length and I think it would look stunning dyed midnight blue. One day I will pluck up the courage to try.

Mum wore a powder blue polyester trouser suit to her wedding (registry office) I don't think she kept it! However she did keep the evening dress that her parent bought her for her 21st (two years later) which I always planned on wearing (deep purple velvet, empire line with a very low square neck) As I'm 4 inches taller than my Mum, and take after my Dads side of the family, hips, bum and boobs (me) vs ironing board (mum) it only fit me when I was 13 Grin

I've saved mine, but I've no idea why because I hope that DD never has to wear it! It's a maternity one.....a very tasteful Vogue designed evening dress in dairy milk purple raw silk.

NomDePlume · 30/05/2006 14:22

Yes, I'm 4 inches taller than my Mum too (although the same shape)

moondog · 30/05/2006 14:37

I rescued mil's beautiful ivory damask early 60s number when she died a few months ago.
It's tiny (size 8?) but what shocked me most was how much it bloody cost to be cleaned and put in acid free box and paper.
£100 plus!!!
Shock

NotAnOtter · 30/05/2006 15:02

franny odd odd and more odd...not even a nice bump!

fuzzywuzzy · 30/05/2006 15:21

To put a different perspective on things. My weddind dress was a traditional one, all coverd in intricate gold plated silver embroidery...If we get very poor, all we need to do is burn the red silk dress and sell the silver...!!!! Until then I bet no burglar would ever dream of nicking the ten tonne dress stored in the attic....

womblingalong · 31/05/2006 14:09

Yes,

I've worn my mum's wedding sari a couple of times, it's red tie dyed silk chiffon with a few bits of gold thread embroidery on it, in fact one of my friends from uni wore it to my wedding! In fact it's traditional in some indian families to wear your wedding sari to family weddings.

alligator · 31/05/2006 14:33

I want to wear my mum's dress when I get married and it does fit me. Its a beautiful hand crocheted dress made by my gran, long and straight.

However the thought of organising a wedding makes me want to run for the hills so cant see it happening tbh Grin

alexh · 01/06/2006 16:30

I wore my mothers wedding dress. she was 19 when she got married and I was 35 and 11 months.......luckily hers was of the quite high necled, long sleeved variety (1967). I had to lose about 1.5 stone to get into it (I put most of it back on during three week eating marathon driving around France on honeymoon). I am going to keep it and hope if I have a daughter she will at least consider it. Is there really noone else out there that wore their mothers????

gigglinggoblin · 01/06/2006 17:07

my mum cut up her wedding dress for me to dress up in when i was about 7 so wore it loads! i wore her veil for my 1st communion but that never made it to the dressing up box
