I am going to be doing a few days in London showing the dc ( with a buggy) the sights in July. What would be a good choice of outfit? I want to look smart and be comfortable at the same time, omg I sound like the mother of the bride:) sort of chic but practical then...

I guess I'll be walking round museums, trafalgar square etc and on public transport.

Should I get a rucksack or will a cross over bag be better? Dc are 3 and 6, so out of nappies but still wanting snacks:)

I took DC to London for the day recently, doing the types of activities you mention. I went for slim fit dark blue jeans, navy breton, neon pink print scarf and white supergas. I like across body bags in leather or oil cloth. And judging by the weather so far this year, a waterproof!!!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/06/2013 14:47

Skinnies
Converse
No rucksack
And yes to a waterproof! I like the ones that are macs but look like parkas.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/06/2013 14:47

And if it's warmer -

tube skirt/dress
denim jacket
Converse
brolly

Lavenderhoney · 15/06/2013 14:59

Thanks:) i like the sound of those suggestions , but converse - I haven't bought them before- can you advise on which ones would look nice with a skirt or dress? I don't like the ones that come up your ankle, that isn't what you mean is it?!!

Cross over bag- am thinking a Cambridge satchel as I would like one anyway...

Wear layers. Boyfriend jeans. I would go with sandal flats instead of converse - mine make my feet hurt as there is no support and Fab pair of sunglasses like raybans.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/06/2013 15:07

Low tops - I've just bought my first pair since I was a teenager (am 43!) and love them.

These are mine Warning - they come up big.

Wheresthepopcornagain · 15/06/2013 15:14

Yes yes to stylish maxi if the weather is good. No worries if you have to bend over to do something.

talkingnonsense · 15/06/2013 15:31

I find converse too flat for lots of walking- but there are loads of similiar comfier plimsolls around.

forevergreek · 15/06/2013 15:33

Haha, sorry, but what do you think people in London wear 365 days of the year?

pippop1 · 15/06/2013 15:37

I live in London. I would never wear a rucksack as you are more likely to get pickpocketed and not notice. Also will annoy people on the tube or buses as it will stick out. Much safer to have your valuable belongings where you can see them in an across the body bag.

pippop1 · 15/06/2013 15:40

I think trainers are best. If it rains and you are wearing sandals it won't be fun. Fold up kagoul type garment with a hood is more practical than an umbrella and lighter to carry.

It's hard to look elegant in the rain.

burberryqueen · 15/06/2013 15:43

no rucksack, messenger style bag.
comfortable shoes.
other than that nobody will care what you look like apart from you, so please yourself.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 15/06/2013 15:49

I'd go for cropped jeans/trousers with flat sandals or Superga-type plimsolls.
A light cardi/jersey blazer but just a brolly for rain - it might be wet in July but it shouldn't be cold, and the first thing you'll do if it rains is find shelter I assume?

CoolStoryBro · 15/06/2013 15:51

Wear whatever you normally wear. It's only London!

mirry2 · 15/06/2013 15:54

Those of us who live in London dress te same as people in other parts of the country. No need to dress up - trainers, jeans, jacket and any old shoulder bag (with a good closure to deter pickpockets)

Lavenderhoney · 15/06/2013 16:21

I don't live in the UK at the moment, so I have to pack suitable clothes for the trip in London - I'm keen to look chic but practical:)

I worked in London years ago but its not the same as sight seeing with dc:) I remember now about rucksack people on the tube and getting bashed with them when they turn round, so thanks for that.

I like the tips on cross over bags, and will be looking at some converse:)

wentshopping · 15/06/2013 16:27

I wouldn't bother with the brolly - so difficult to hold a brolly and push a buggy without hitting someone on the head - usually my own.

forevergreek · 15/06/2013 16:43

I live in London. I would say wear whatever you are comfy in and If it rains go get coffee in a cafe!

mysteryfairy · 15/06/2013 18:18

Don't get new shoes! Wear something you already have that you know for sure will be comfy or it could be a miserable day.

ihearsounds · 15/06/2013 18:29

What do you wear at the moment? Surely you dont walk around naked and shoeless. Wear these things.

Lavenderhoney · 15/06/2013 18:32

Ihearsounds, I don't live in the UK and its 50 degree here so I might cut a dash in central London with my current clothes- unless its forecast super hot in July!

Thanks all:)

We tend to wear clothes in London - just normal stuff Smile

I go out in London with 5 and 2 yo and buggy all the time. Load drinks and snacks into buggy. Wear across body bag with valuables, keys etc. wear sandals or shoes you can walk forever in.

Wear layers - who knows what the weather will be like and you may be out all day and into evening.

Thames Clipper boats are fantastic with buggies and can get you around quickly and the DC love them.

Depending on where you are going your 6yo might do well on their scooter if they have one (south bank, Greenwich, O2 areas for example).

Use buses where you can - much easier with buggy, or walk. You can buy excellent London bus aps cheaply and they are invaluable. Real time info.
