can a short arse wear a maxi?

Ok, I'm 5'2' 5' 3" and my Mum has always drummed into me that I'm too short for a long dress.
Surely everyone's wearing a maxi these days?
And if I have it turned up to the right length for me, it should look ok?
Or are they really best left to the tall?

If you were 5' wide as well then perhaps not (it's a proportions thing) but on the vast majority of people there's a suitable flattering maxi that works.

HappyGirlNow · 14/06/2013 12:35

I'd say wear what you want if you're happy and comfortable but I do think they can look a bit odd on the shorter woman..

SPsCliffingAllOverMN · 14/06/2013 12:38

I'm 4foot 11.5 and I manage.

I have one from select. Its coral and like a really long vest top. Didn't need taking up to much

ChunkyPickle · 14/06/2013 12:39

I don't see why a short person can't (a 5 footer myself)

However as a short and dumpy (and currently pregnant) 5 footer I know I would look like a moving, floral tent.

DrGoogleWillSeeYouNow · 14/06/2013 12:53

I think if you're slim then yes.

landofsoapandglory · 14/06/2013 12:57

Yes, get one from a Petite range then you won't have to mess about taking it up. I'm 5'4 and got some T-shirt style ones from Dorothy Perkins' Petite range.

JennySense · 14/06/2013 13:01

lol at the flora moving tent!
Hmmm - the one I have is the Gap drape neck jersey for the hols :)
I need to have a lot of dresses altered at the mo, so I'll add it to my list x

The thing with jersey t-shirt type material is that you can get away without having to hem it as it will just roll slightly when cut.

scarlet76 · 14/06/2013 17:10

I'm just about 5ft. Generally in proportion and a size 6-8. I have a couple from Next petite and Boden petite. I wear with heels and think they actually flatter.

landofsoapandglory · 14/06/2013 18:55

I've got the Gap one too, Jenny, in the blue. I love it so much. I am trying to convince myself I don't need the other colours!

I'm 5ft 3, old and quite flabby, big boobs so really all wrong for maxis, and till I bought the one above (in a medium-I'm size 14) could never find one to flatter. I recommend it as they have a sale on and never had any bother with returns if it doesn't work for you.

Doing again as not a regular mumsnet user and not sure if I can link properly...

LassieGoHome · 14/06/2013 19:25

I second getting a proper petite one. Next have some really nice ones in at the mo here I really like the ombre one and the plain jersey ones. the trick is to keep it simple.

whataboutbob · 15/06/2013 22:26

I m 5'4" and I wouldn't t do it. They look silly on a shorter woman, like you're 8 years old and got into your big sister s closet ( or your mum's). I just don t think it works. In fact I also think they look better on black, or maybe Mediterranean women, not so good on most white British women. Don t know why. Maybe because the dress is a bit dramatic and needs someone with strong colouring. Or maybe I m just weird.

Trills · 15/06/2013 22:27

Yes but you might need to take it up so it' not dragging on the floor.

Trills · 15/06/2013 22:27

If it's the correct length for you then it won't look any sillier than it would on someone taller.

lissieloo · 16/06/2013 11:12

I agree with trills, a proper, really well fitting dress can make a short woman look taller. Its when you wear one with extra frills and excess material that you look swamped.

practicality · 16/06/2013 11:54

I'm 5"3 and I wear them all the time. I think they are fabulous if long and lean in shape but without an empire line puffy bit.

I think they elongate the figure. I wear mine with cropped cardigans, jumpers and denim jackets giving some semblance of a waist. If I wear anything hip length they start losing the proportions thing.

I'm a size 14 apple.

WaitingIsWhatIDo · 16/06/2013 12:20

Fine if you are slim and in proportion. I see lots of big women in them though and to be fair, I think if they feel comfortable and nice, then why the heck not.
