My sister called last week to say she's ordered me a very, very, very belated birthday present.

It arrived this morning.

After a week of excited anticipation, i now feel rather deflated. I thought it might have been a lovely new book or something.

I am not at all stylish, so don't know if it's actually as strange-looking as my 'no-sense-of-style' head thinks it is.

I'll have to call her later to say thanks. She'll be really disappointed if i ask to return, so that's out of the question.

Is this something i can wear without attracting strange looks?

I'm 23, and normally wear leggings, long tops and flats.

At work i wear black trousers, black flats and a white top.

I dont like it at all. not classic enough for me.

try and say its a bit glitzy to use daily and get it swapped for something you like.

MummyFirst · 12/06/2013 11:11

It really isn't my thing, and there seems to be an awful lot going on there.

I'm pretty sure that debenhams will accept refunds for a credit note/voucher to spend with them if you had something bought as a gift. That way you could thank your sister and retun it so she's non the wiser.

If you do honestly think that you would use it though, (rather than stuff it in the back of the wardrobe, only to rediscover it in 18 months to send to the charity) then keep it.

HTH

lookingbusy · 12/06/2013 11:13

Do you enough of your sister for it to be an issue if you don't use it? It's a very strange present to buy someone as it's a bit 'special'. And by 'special' I mean 'gaudy and horrible'.

daisydoodoo · 12/06/2013 11:37

id take to local Debenhams and exchange for something that you will use.

foxysocks · 12/06/2013 11:38

oh dear. what a tricky situation. i would probs try to exchange too as I agree with you, there is no way i would use that.

TheCraicDealer · 12/06/2013 14:04

Bring it back and ask for a credit note. If she asks "where is that gaudy bag I got your for your birthday?", tell her that the sequins started to fall off and as it had been discontinued they had to give you a credit note instead of a replacement.

This is clearly your sister's attempt to "jazz up" your wardrobe. You have to shut this shit down now before she has you looking like Liberace on acid.

FauxFox · 12/06/2013 14:22

Horrid sorry. I like sparkles but that is not nice. Thank sister profusely, possible FB or Instagram a photo of it with a gushy caption and then exchange for one you like/something else.

bleedingheart · 12/06/2013 14:40

Oh my. That really isn't pretty. She could have got something much nicer for £35/50.

BunnyLebowski · 12/06/2013 14:44

That is absolutely minging.

I reckon she was given it as a present and is trying to fob it off on you.

Surely no-one would willingly buy that? Shock

cardamomginger · 12/06/2013 15:03

Hate it. Sorry. I like the sequins-falling-off excuse.

PestoSwimissimos · 12/06/2013 15:10

Yuck!

You don't want that even taking up wardrobe space... Oh dear Sad

CajaDeLaMemoria · 12/06/2013 15:12

Yep, use the sequins excuse and get something else.

It's just...horrid. There is no saving it.

BerryBlast · 12/06/2013 15:12

Oh, does your sister like you ????? Smile only joking, but sorry I don't like it. I think you could call this a marmite bag - you either love it or hate it and I hate it Smile

JazzDalek · 12/06/2013 15:34

Shock It's very...special?

I would never buy that for someone unless they had specifically requested it!

dexter73 · 12/06/2013 15:39

Debs will definitely give you a credit note for the lowest selling price. Last week I took back a dress I had bought in November and never worn. I said I didn't have the receipt so just got a gift card with the refund on it.

RenterNomad · 12/06/2013 16:16

Oh dear! No wonder it had to be reduced...

ephemeralfairy · 12/06/2013 16:25

Not nice at all! And not stylish either; in fact very dated and old-fashioned looking.
I can confirm they will def give you a gift card (I was in a v. similar situation after Christmas!). Now you just have to decide what fib to tell you sister Wink

FiveSugarsPlease · 12/06/2013 16:28

Haha!

Thanks, everyone. Glad it's not just me.
It's not even practical. Far too small for my mini suitcase worth of stuff i take everywhere with me. And the handles are the choice of a massive chain making the bag swing by my knees; or the thick handle, which makes it tuck right into my armpit.

About to phone her now... Hoping i can at least pretend to like it for the duration of the phonecall.

I really can't be bothered with the 1-hr trek to my local Debenhams. I can see it sitting in the wardrobe for a few weeks.

SilverSixpence · 12/06/2013 17:53

Just swap it, Debenhams were fine about exchanging gifts without receipt last time I tried. £35 will buy you something else lovely that you will use.

thepurplepenguin · 12/06/2013 18:02

Yowzers, that's horrid...

SnookyPooky · 12/06/2013 18:28

Um I am struggling to articulate.

Allthingspretty · 12/06/2013 18:33

pretend there qas a hole in the lining or something tp your sister and see if tpu cam get am exchange

HahaHarrie · 12/06/2013 18:44

Jeepers! I was thinking how bad could it be, but it is quite an ugly bag. I'm no fashionista but I would not be caught dead holding that bag.

If your sister will be really upset, it's not worth the grief. Just say thanks, then throw it in the back of the cupboard and never use it. After a while pass it on to charity. If she asks where it is say your handbag got stolen or it fell apart from over use!

Start hinting heavily for a better present next year!
