Come and talk to me about nose jobs

Because I am seriously considering one.

I was bullied as a child/teen as my nose is huge. I have a lump near the bridge that resembles a ski jump and the tip is very bulbous.

Looking at this written down it seems like the most trivial problem ever. I really should just get over the fact that I was bullied and kids are cruel but I can't! I am holding back getting married because of the thought of having my picture taken. I would love to be a carefree bride but I can't seem to shake these confidence issues.

So has anyone had a nose job?! Were you pleased with the results? Do you regret it at all?

You could ask chap Sad

I think it's one of those things that many people are happy with, except the ones for whom it went wrong. You can't exactly hide it if it does, can you?

My DD had one when she was 18 and was really happy with the result. She's not regretted it and it gave her much more confidence. She found it hard to look people in the eye before it, didn't feel she could wear pretty clothes and didn't like anyone looking at her profile. It took me ages to get used to her new look. She literally didn't look like DD any more which was very very odd. It was very painful straight after (she described it as feeling as if someone had lobbed a brick at her forehead) and had to sleep propped up at night for a while. She said she'd only recommend it if you absolutely hate your nose because it wasn't a nice experience. Her surgeon was fantastic though. He gave her a nose that fits her face rather than one of those pinched little Hollywood type ones.

You make a very good point- that's the only aspect that's holding me back really, the fact that if it goes wrong I am stuck with it.

Seize really happy for your DD- sounds like its really changed her life.

I feel exactly the way your DD did prior to her op. I feel like it doesn't matter how much effort I make with my clothes, hair and makeup etc because all I see in the mirror is my massive nose.

Every time I meet someone new I am "checking out" their nose- how bloody weird I am!

Noone ever gets to take a profile pic of me and I find it really hard to talk confidently to people and look them in the eye (which makes doing a public facing role quite difficult!)

I think that generally they are pretty straight forward but you need a surgeon who does loads and loads. The guy who did DD always asks his theatre staff if they think he needs to tweak something before he ends the op. He says right at the end of the op before the swelling comes up, you can see what it will look like. At that point he always asks his team for their opinion which I thought was v humble.

Yes it really did change DDs life. And it brought out her other features too. I'd not realised how beautiful her lips were and you could notice her pretty eyes/eyebrows properly too. Her nose was just way too big for her little face and overwhelmed her other features.

You could always go for a consultation if you felt you wanted to explore it further. Which part of the country do you live? DDs guy was in London. I'd pm you their name if it would be of use.

paintyourbox · 09/06/2013 23:39

I am in the North but would travel for the right surgeon- if you could PM me that would be amazing!

The rest of my face is in proportion and I think that's why my nose looks really weird and out of place as it were. People often ask if I have broken it because of the lump.

Don't bother with your GP, they generally know bugger all. You're better of doing the leg work yourself.

This is an excellent place to start: www.lookyourbestuk.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=8&sid=99a1ea7973d910add629815399e4c2b2

One of my best friends had a nose job. It was phenomenal - it still looked exactly like her nose, but it was now right for her face IYSWIM.

I think you need to research carefully. See several surgeons. If their recommendations differ, ask each why they give the recommendation they do, and why they don't advise what the others do. Get them to justify what they intend to do.

You were lucky, OldBag. Most of them have no knowledge at all of plastic surgeons except for local ones perhaps.

Wow thanks for your responses- you have made me feel really positive about the prospect of getting my nose sorted!

I did have a referral from my GP but it was years ago now and I didn't follow through with it because I was busy with uni.

I think I might meet 4 or 5 surgeons and see what they have to say. I won't rush into anything- maybe wait a few months before making a decision.

Read up on it as well, so you are familiar with the usual and less usual procedures (there might be some variation). Ask the surgeons why they'd do one thing and not another.

They should give you success rates/complication rates, etc. I think what's also important is to find out from them what their success and complication rates are for the type of nose you have and the type of procedure you require. Very important to get it all as specific to you as possible.

Good luck!

Dear Seize The Afternoon, could you send me the name of the surgeon who did DD? I am going to grasp the bull by the horns (or by the nose perhaps). I just hope I'm not cutting off my nose to spite my face...?!! :-O

Everstrong · 20/01/2015 14:19

Hey Gelliebean,

Good luck with your nose job journey.

I am the original OP (I have name changed since then!)

I didn't end up having a nose job, instead I had therapy! I found a great counsellor (as counselling is recommended by a lot of surgeons prior to having an op) who helped me deal with my lack of self confidence and the terrible bullying. I had over a year of therapy and it's worked wonders in many areas of my life.

The main reason I decided not to have the op was that deep down I knew that my confidence probably wouldn't improve once I'd had the op- I'd just find something else to stress about. Additionally, I had all 4 wisdom teeth out and the horrendous pain and swelling has put me off having anyone mess with my face again!

I also spent some time learning contouring techniques to slim down the tip of my nose, done well it makes a massive difference (I've since taught a couple of friends the same technique and one of them commented "it's like an instant nose job!") My nose will always be big but it's not really a problem anymore!

MadisonMontgomery · 20/01/2015 14:51

I am definitely getting a nose job this year - for years have been letting people talk me out of it as I was nervous about surgery, but had an op last year and it was fine! Don't have problems with confidence etc, but my nose is just too big for my face. IF&f anyone has any advice or recommendations for a surgeon in/near Yorkshire I'd love them Smile

Instituteofstudies · 20/01/2015 18:30

Gelliebean I've pm'd you.
