Rosacea

Hi All,

Just looking for a bit of advice!

I suffer from the skin condition Rosacea on my face which is basically a condition that means I have a flushed complexion in certain areas on my face and am also prone to spots. When first diagnosed I was pregnant so was unable to take medication to control. This led to it becoming quite severe until I was able to start taking the antibiotic I needed. During this time I was referred to skin cosmetic specialist who 'matched' me with a camouflage foundation which completely covers my red complexion. Obviously as you can imagine this foundation is quite full coverage and is heavy on the skin! I have been using product for about 4 years now.

Anyhow I now feel my skin has calmed a little and I would like to convert back to a more natural looking foundation and I have heard that some brands have specific foundations to deal with issues like mine!

Does anybody have any recommendations for any products / brands eg. Clinique, Benefit, YSL etc? basically anything that a department store would stock!

Any advice is hugely appreciated!

YSL touché eclait foundation is really good for my mil and myself to help cover the redness but still be natural.

holidayseeker · 09/06/2013 22:10

To add I tried the Clinique redness solutions range but these made me look yellow Shock

Jane Iredale mineral make up is supposed to be excellent for rosacea and sensitive reactive skin.

GypsyFloss · 10/06/2013 06:30

I can wear Clinique foundation and it doesn't aggravate it. I also rave about the Body Shop Aloe Vera range for moisturiser ,as do lots on here.

FiftyShadesofGreyMatter · 10/06/2013 06:43

I too have Rosacea although it's quite well under control now.

I often just use Thin Lizzy concealer on the red bits, it's got a really good coverage and for everday I don't bother with foundation over the top.

Bare Minerals is good for covering redness without irritating rosacea, although some people prefer Lily Lilo - make sure you get the right colour match, though (I seem to be somewhere between Deathly Ash and Bananaman in the BM palette, annoyingly). Other people swear by Vichy Dermablend, which you can buy in Boots.

I have it too and use Bare Minerals foundation and Bisque concealor.

Hi All, thank you for the comments! I will try the body shop moisturiser so thanks for that and look into all the foundation recommendations! Also does anybody know if these foundations mentioned have SPF protection too? I've noticed that the sun doesn't help matters. With a 2 week sun holiday coming up I'm looking to do all I can to prevent it worsening!

Thank you!

I also rave about the aloe range from TBS, day and night cream, cleanser are all great, don't get on with the face wash tbh.

valiumredhead · 10/06/2013 11:57

BM is factor 20 spf.

Pusspuss1 · 10/06/2013 12:23

You could try the Clinique redness solutions foundation? I had it for a while and it was fine. Quite heavy duty coverage by my standards though.

I have some redness to cover up from rosacea and am currently using the YSL Teint Éclat foundation, which doesn't provide as much coverage as the Clinique stuff but is nice.

valiumredhead · 10/06/2013 13:02

My skin has improved since changing my eye make up remover, I use The Body Shop's Chamomille remover which is the most amazing stuff ever!

lovetomatoes · 10/06/2013 13:26

My rosacea has improved dramatically. I've done all of the following things, but not in isolation so can't say what's the magic bullet
-washed my face once a day for a week with Selsun shampoo.
-gave up gluten and cheese for a month.
-started taking WellWoman multivits. I suspect it's the Evening Primrose/Starflower oil that does the trick.
-using Shiseido spf50. Great product as recommended by Sali Hughes

If you're going to try Bare Minerals it might be best to ask for samples first. I have rosacea too, and Bare Minerals was awful for my skin, turned it red and itchy. There is an ingredient in it that irritates some types of skin, epecially in the heat, or a situation where your face gets hot like at the gym.

QueenOfCats · 10/06/2013 13:42

I have rosacea top and the only foundation that works to cover my redness is Vichy Dermablend.

It's brilliant, you don't need much of it and it stays put.

valiumredhead · 10/06/2013 13:43

BM matte version is less likely to make you itchy as it doesn't contain bismuth, the original one does.

QueenOfCats · 10/06/2013 13:48

Vichy Dermablend is SPF 20

holidayseeker · 10/06/2013 14:51

I would say if you are going on holiday that you will need to use a separate suncream to protect your skin as the sun can cause my skin to start misbehaving and cover from a foundation is not enough.

I have it too. I used to use Jane Iredale but can't tolerate it now. Also, it bothers me (breathing issues if I use it). I think powders are not great for rosacea. I have had most success with Chantecaille Future Skin although I can only tolerate it in Summer (rosacea is so much worse and drier in winter). It's prohibitively expensive though at just under sixty quid, and only offers light coverage. If you call Space NK (a store...I called Henley-on-Thames Space NK, I think and they colour-matched over the phone and very kindly sent me three pots (different shades) to try to test for colour and reaction (I explained I have rosacea). It has no fragrance, a high water content and no spf ( I cannot find an spf my rosacea can tolerate... I don't think spfs are great for the face anyway...I'd rather chuck on a hat!)
Here is a link to a list of Space NK stores, including HonT:

I found vanilla a good match. It is for fair skin (I used to be ivory in other lines, or the lightest or second to lightest yellow-y shade). Vanilla is a good combo of pink and yellow. I know a lot of people with rosacea want a lot of yellow to cancel out the redness but the vanilla, to me, looks much more natural and still covers okay for me.
May I ask if your rosacea affects your eyes? I am on the lookout for a mascara since the only one I tolerate was reformulated!
HTH

LeoandBoosmum · 11/06/2013 02:08

Oh, I think Fenwicks also stock Chantecaille...if you have that nearby? Also, you may have a Space NK near you who stocks it. Check ahead though as not all stock it. It has a reassuringly short ingredient list which is part of what appeals to me. Just wish it wasn't so expensive... When you have rosacea and are sensitive it's just great to find something! It lasts a fair while too. A pot with daily use would last 4 months I think.
