You know that middle-aged grey/highlights look? Thats me..

My mousey brown hair has been highlighted forever. Normally have 3 colours ranging from pale brown to blond.
When the first few greys appeared they seem to be camouflaged quite well. Now its a different story.
I have very visible grey roots, with minimal mouse. The rest is OK.
If I have an all over colour, maybe with highlights on top, won't I get even worse roots?
My hairdresser is a coming on wednesday & I'm not sure what to ask for.
Any advice would be appreciated.

No hair colour experts out there?

Watching with interest, am in very similar position.

nellyjelly · 09/06/2013 08:19

Me too. Highlights don't work now. Last 2 visits to hairdresser resulted in overall light colour with highlights added on top. Roots came through very quickly. This is happened twice at 2 hairdressers and am not happy but not sure what to do now?

lucidlady · 09/06/2013 09:13

This Happens to me. I get a base then highlights, just have to get it done more frequently.

middleagedspread · 09/06/2013 09:34

Thanks for the replies.
nelly&lucid were your roots worse than before?
I will talk to my hairdresser & see if she can come up with a magic solution.

I have white hair sprinkled with bits of dark (natural underneath all the colour that is). I have highlights comprising platinum blonde, medium blonde and a few darker blonde/light brown to match the few remaining natural strands. It seems to work quite well (hope not deluded!)

I think the key is to take some of the blonde lighter to match the ever increasing lightness of the greys.

I wouldn't go for an overall colour as that will make the regrowth look much more obvious.

HTH.

Perplexing · 09/06/2013 09:47

Actually, I suppose that technically my blonde 'highlights' are actually low lights as they are darker then white - even the platinum ones!

practicality · 09/06/2013 10:08

Go natural. It will probably look stunning and save you a fortune to boot.

nellyjelly · 09/06/2013 10:38

Yes my roots are worse. Before they were lightening mousy hair blonde and now they are darkening it down and o ly highlighting it a bit.

The grey roots look horrid, worse than dark ones.

flippitydoodah · 09/06/2013 10:40

watching with interest as I seem to have lots of obvious grey all of a sudden since my new hairstyle.

alemci · 09/06/2013 10:57

I think you may have to go to overall colour at some point because the greys become more than the mousey colour. Semi permanents aren't too bad as they wash out gradually and blend in better. also you can do them at home whereas hi- lites need to be done by hairdresser.

ask your hairdresser.

cardamomginger · 09/06/2013 14:18

Sounds like me. I just embraced full head colour. Started off with semi permanent and now have permanent. In the summer, and when I had longer hair, I'd get highlights done as well. Yes, the roots show and it's a hassle. Oh well!

middleagedspread · 09/06/2013 15:01

Thanks so much for the responses.
Of course grey is pretty much inevitable.
Looking at my awful roots I think the time has come to have an all over colour. Sounds like there's no going back. I'm turning into my mother, gulp.

me too, I did all this but have now gone back to a base of 2 shades lighter than my natural dark brown and I have to do roots every 3 weeks. I alternate between salon and a £2 dye from Wilkos and just do the parting myself. it looks fine really - better than the grey/highlights.

nellyjelly · 11/06/2013 08:37

Let us know what your hairdresser suggests middleagedspread.

NinjaNotGeisha · 11/06/2013 09:21

Go natural - it will make your skin glow and look better than any dye possibly could!

sue52 · 11/06/2013 10:13

I'm 6 months into the process of going natural. It's not easy but I can see it suits my skin tone more and the condition of the unadulterated hair is great. If you're fed up with seeing roots every couple of weeks, it could be the way to go.

practicality · 11/06/2013 11:39

Going grey looking great might help. Also google pinterest grey hair.

It's not that scary!

middleagedspread · 11/06/2013 16:14

Thanks so much for the replied. It's good to know I'm not the only one with this dilemma. I'll report back tomorrow when I've seen the hairdresser.

I seem to have gone grey in most places now, after tinting my grey/light brown a gold colour in streaks to merge with the darker colour at the back. Have noticed through the transition that keeping hair a warm colour is quite flattering, and a really ageing grey is a cool colour, if it makes sense. What I'm trying to say is that blonde highlights/lowlights can work well when the grey's taking over.

middleagedspread · 11/06/2013 16:56

Showtime, the thing is, my natural hair colour (without the grey) is a horrible dark blonde/brown. I think you're right about keeping it a bit lighter. i did try dark highlights once but it made my sallow skin appear worse. I worry about the orange sheen that seems rather popular round here!

nellyjelly · 11/06/2013 20:17

God no. Can't face going grey.....I know some people look great but mot me. Grey hair and my ageing complexion, the horror!

kissmyheathenass · 11/06/2013 20:22

Semis are the way to go. You avoid that awful straight line of white along your parting. I find permanent colour far too harsh these days.

middleagedspread · 12/06/2013 11:23

Quick update.
Hairdresser said it's not time for all over colour yet. Most of the grey is on the crown so she did more lighter highlights there with the rest a more honey shade with a few darker ones. It looks fine, but will need to review in a month. Elle McPhearson I'm not

Thanks for update. Going on Saturday. I had quite a dark blonde colour on in May with some highlights but been on hols and the sun has really bleached the colour out.

I think it is going to be expensive to maintain a non grey look though, regular upkeep.
