Please help me find a decent hairstyle

I am (hopefully) treating myself to a haircut on Friday.

I have thick black wavy hair that recently appears to be falling out in clumps for no apparent reason

I have spent my life with long hair with the exception of one flirtation with ultra short hair which friends have asked me never to repeat (I was aiming for Audrey Hepburn. I got nowhere near).

Am I just destined for yet another version of "longish layers that just end up being tied up in a bun anyway"? I have neither the time nor the inclination to straighten my hair every day, although it does look lovely straight. And one of the long term straightening systems is outside the budget right now.

I'd love to have an actual hairstyle as opposed to "frizzy/fluffy/messy mop that's scraped back into a bun"

Can anyone help? I'm stylistically challenged at the best of times, but I'm totally clueless about my hair.

Anyone?

This is my first haircut in ages in a place where I actually speak the language properly and I'd love to actually get a decent style finally.

I can't help, which is not at all what you want to hear I know, but I am in a v similar hair rut.

I have long hair, which normally looks a bit shit cos I can't be arsed to straighten it or whatever, but is handy for tying up etc. mid length I feel tends to risk being frumpy. I too had a rotten experience with a short crop in my teens which has put me off...

Could you manag a bob style? Think they tend to be more high maintenance mind you. What's your face shape?

vvviola · 04/06/2013 23:03

I just couldn't manage a bob - without straightening my hair would go into a very unflattering triangle shape! I've a round-ish face and a bob does suit me a bit, but only when it's straightened and that's just not feasible.

My hair is lovely when it's long and straightened too, but that's not feasible either :(

Fringe?

I cut one in on a whim and I'm pleased with it. I hadn't had one for over 25 years before. I just straighten the fringe and the rest dries curly/wavy.

SneezySnatcher · 05/06/2013 10:38

I would suggest a fringe too. I have a blunt fringe which I love because (I think) it makes what could be boring long hair a bit more up-to-date and I don't have to tweeze my eyebrows

SparkyTGD · 05/06/2013 12:08

Yes to fringe, Zooey Deschanel?

You would probably only need to straighten/tame your fringe everday.

Wrigglebum · 05/06/2013 12:44

Yes to a fringe hiding unruly eyebrows! It's also a lot cheaper than Botox for hiding those frown lines Grin.

I just wash, pop through curl cream, wait a bit, then straighten fringe and curl stubborn straight bits next to fringe. Takes 5 mins. On non wash days I spray curls with water, comb and leave.

vvviola · 05/06/2013 15:28

Hmm... I hadn't thought of a fringe. Would such a heavy fringe not be a bit too much with black hair & pale skin? (I mean, I'm no Zooey Deschanel!)

I could go for a slightly lighter one I suppose? And then the usual long-ish layers for the rest?

You'd think that by the time I reached my 30s I'd have some idea of what to do with my own hair!!

If they cut into it then it won't look so heavy iyswim.

I just figured when I did mine that I could always clip it if it was awful until it was long enough to be a side swept fringe.

Chunkamatic · 05/06/2013 19:45

Yes to a fringe! I had oe a couple of years ago (actually took a pic of dear Zooey in to show the hairdresser Blush ) but decided after a year it made my big nose even more big looking, so grew it out.

But Yes to a fringe! Far less maintenance than a bob and you can clip it up if you want to grow it out.

SparkyTGD · 06/06/2013 13:00

I find a fringe good, but if its above eyebrow length it actually draws attention to unruly eyebrows.

When my fringe is freshly cut I wear it short & straight then when it gets too long to be straight I have a side swept fringe, for a bit of a change, then get it cut again when it gets too long for that.
