After lurking on here for quite a while aspiring to be more stylish I decided to have a HoC consultation. I am a paintbox spring and happy about it.

I have sorted my wardrobe and purchased a few new bits, am enjoying wearing colour and have received some nice compliments.

I have noticed however that I am starting to feel that I am dressing quite like a children's tv presenter. Of course nothing wrong with that but it doesn't really work in an office and in professional meetings. It isn't really my style either.

I was told that I should try wearing 3 colours at least. Pinks, corals and blues are my most ** ratings.

Previous to having it done I wore black and dark grey work trousers with some colour or dark in a top and jacket or cardigan. I have mainly replaced trousers from dark to blue but it feels strange and samey wearing blue trousers every day.

I am thinking of going on a style session but can't book that for another month.

Have any of you wise stylish people got any advise you could offer please?

Sorry this is long. Thanks.

I'm an autumn and I definitely back the three colours advice. But in my mind, the third colour can be in lipstick, jewellery, tights, (I like big jewellery so I think it works) or a scarf as much as in clothes.

I know what you mean about the trousers, but did wearing black trousers feel samey? Also - these days there are tons of diff coloured trousers around - your neutral could be in a top.

Charliewasagoodhamster · 31/05/2013 18:15

Thanks for your response charitygirl. I hadn't thought about the 3rd colour in that way. I'll have a look at that. And you make a good point about feeling samey in the black too. I guess it just felt safer. The blue seems more uniform to me now and I wish it didn't.

The idea if colours on the bottom would be great if I were happy with my bottom half but I'm a 5'3 pear with a size 14 bum I like to pretend doesn't exist.

I love the spring colours, but agree they can be a bit mad if too many worn together! Three colours sounds less scary if one of them is a neutral, one a bright coloured top, and one a scarf/statement accessory or similar.

I know a v v professional woman who is a blue spring and she is terrifyingly corporate while sticking entirely to her palette and always wearing at least three colours, so it's definitely possible!

Hi, oh yay a Spring thread!
I'm a Blue Spring (recently 'diagnosed') and an office worker. I know what you mean about kids TV presenter at times!
The wearing 3 colours - my HoC lady suggested 2 colours (darker/neutral on bottom half) and a splash (accessory eg scarf, necklace, print).
The personal style day will really help pull it all together - I've found it great in letting go of things I just can't wear (overly casual).

Mumelie · 31/05/2013 22:28

Sorry that first line sounds a bit Hmm but I was genuinely excited Grin as only just got into this colours thing!

BirdyBedtime · 31/05/2013 22:36

Hi. I'm a bright spring and so my best colours are similar to yours. I had mine done 6 years ago but still sometimes feel unprofessional in my turquoise suit when everyone else is in black, grey etc ......... but when I first started wearing my colours I got so many compliments and still do when I'm in star colours. You just need to choose carefully and carry it with confidence. I've never worn 3 colours in main clothes, but keep my third to a scarf, jewellery or even a bag. Those people dressed all in black are probably secretly envious at how well your clothes suit you and how well you carry them.

BirdyBedtime · 31/05/2013 22:38

Meant to also say if you struggle with bright coours on the bottom try the light grey or camel colours from the palette as a stepping stone.

Not sure if this helps but I would second Hopefully's comment on scarves/neutrals. I am a blue spring and am usually resplendent in jeans or coloured skinnies, a top (bright or neutral) and jumper or jacket with scarf to bring it together. It feels kind of normal to me. A scarf brings any outfit together in my opinion and usually provides a good splash. If brighter coloured trousers are too bright I would go for blue or grey. As a pear I think that wearing a jacket over the hips deals with the hip problem well, stopping the coloured trousers looking too much.

How many different Springs does HOC have? What is a paintbox spring?

wools · 01/06/2013 11:31

Ooooh good. A thread for springs. I was diagnosed a blue spring earlier this year and am still struggling a bit with it. I'm looking forward to hearing all the advice and ideas.

Charliewasagoodhamster · 01/06/2013 13:36

Thanks for all the replies. I could be wrong but I think the paintbox spring was about many of the colours across the pallet suiting me.

Sounds like I need to get some more neutrals to balance me out. I have so e good scarfs but am lacking on jewellery and bags.

What colour shoes do you tend to wear?

Thanks again.

Another (bright) spring here! I was more than surprised when I was diagnosed as I thought I would be an autumn. I had mine done last year but due to lack of funds I haven't been able to buy a lot. I did have some spring colours in my wardrobe so I have been trying to make the most of them.

I am struggling to get used to the brightness of everything though Grin and find the three colours thing hard to do.

One thing I have always struggled with is a decent foundation colour. They have always seemed either too warm or too cool for my colouring. Purely by accident I mixed a warm and cool foundation together et voila perfect!

BirdyBedtime · 01/06/2013 16:27

Shoes can be a problem. I've 2 tan pairs, snakeskin heels and turquoise ones for work. Bright blue pumps and red converse. But it has taken me 6 years to get to there. Still have some black boots though.

The other tip for a third colour is nails. Rimmel do one called coralicious which is perfect..

IfYoureHappyAndYouKnowIt · 05/06/2013 07:03

Brown shoes are fine as are a darker blue. TBC I just tend to exclude cooler colours on my feet. Important to think cameo imo .. your feet are a long way away from your face and so I don't think one needs to be too rigid.

IfYoureHappyAndYouKnowIt · 05/06/2013 07:08

With the three colors I would go for two and a splash using for example a scarf or a necklace as a splash. E.g. cobaltish jeans, cream t-shirt and multi colour scarf or gold and bright blue/green necklace.

Has anyone found anything nice - currently available - in the aqua//aquamarine or tangerine shades?
