Eternity ring or pushing present - tell me about yours

I know some people hate the phrase pushing present. :o

Dh has been given a bonus because 2012 was a truly shitty year work wise for our family and put me/us under enormous pressure.

We don't have any pressing bills and savings are ok so DH, bless him, wants to buy me some lovely jewellery, specifically a ring.

I'm a bit lost and lacking inspiration. My watch and wedding and engagement rings are the only things I wear daily. I've been looking at the Tiffany celebration stackable rings but thought the lovely, wise nest of vipers would have some good ideas.

Looking at a decent wedge of cash so don't hold back :o

Sorry - I just got a baby each time :)

cathpip · 31/05/2013 13:25

My hubby bought me a square cut diamond and sapphire eternity ring after I had my children, it never gets taken off and sapphires also come in pink:)

skaen · 31/05/2013 13:28

I went to a lovely jeweller who designs one off rings etc for an eternity ring in a v similar situation to you. It cost about 1200 for a 3/4 hoop of sapphires and diamonds on platinum and I designed it.

skaen · 31/05/2013 13:29

Sorry, to add, I described exactly what I wanted, looked at various arrangements of stones and bands and chose the one I liked best.

Carolra · 31/05/2013 13:35

My DH bought me a Georg Jensen Magic ring (well two of them as one fits inside the other, have a look on Google Images). He is a bit soppy and told me that the inside ring represented DD and the outside one was like two arms wrapped around her... I know, I know, vom-tastic! But the ring is lovely!

And I recently bought myself a ring from Oak Fine Jewellry - the I'll Always Remember Ring here to remember someone special....

I would avoid Tiffany if you can, you're paying for the brand name rather than anything else... you can find nicer jewellery elsewhere that you're less likely to see on someone else in the future....

blueshoes · 31/05/2013 13:45

Sorry, only ever had caesareans ...

MrsLettuce · 31/05/2013 13:46

My pushing present was perfect each time. A live baby - just what I wished for. There's nowt that could compare and I consider myself very lucky indeed.

ComradeJing · 31/05/2013 13:47

The problem is, I don't really know what I want. I'm happy looking on a website going "ohh I like that" but I'm not sufficiently stylish inspired to say "right, I want..."

You need to go shopping Comrade!! Try on a couple of things that you think you might like... where are you based?

expatinscotland · 31/05/2013 13:54

Push present? Pass the bucket!

Titsalinabumsquash · 31/05/2013 13:57

DS3's birth happened to be the day after our anniversary and very near Christmas so DP got me a beautiful tennis bracelet with blue topaz and diamonds in, it's really lovely and blue Topaz is DS's birthstone.

ComradeJing · 31/05/2013 14:05

Sydney carolra.

Look, Hmm I know that pushing present isn't a great saying. It's my 5 year wedding anniversary this year and 10 years since I met dh. I moved country once and city twice. I moved country with 20 days notice. I was DREADING ds birth and deeply frightened I couldn't cope with it on top of ALL the other unmentioned shit from last year.

It's an eternity ring. It's also a gift from dh for everything I dealt with last year including ds birth.

I didn't want to just say eternity ring in case people only told me about 3 stone diamond rings. I want quantity of advice as much as anything else
:o

Oh dear, well I don't know anything about shopping in Sydney, sorry! If you were in London, I'd want to come with you!!

I hate the term "push present" as well - urgh. Ignore the meanies! Sounds like you deserve something lovely just for yourself, and you don't need to justify it to the likes of us!

Don't rush into anything... take yourself off shopping and try on a couple of things... but take your time. It took me a couple of months of vague looking to come across the Remember ring I mentioned... but as soon as I saw it, I knew it was what I was looking for.

StatisticallyChallenged · 31/05/2013 14:52

I have an eternity ring set with princess cut rubies and diamonds (mine and DH's birthstones respectively) for DD's birth. I also have another diamond ring this one which was for forgetting our anniversary. He won't do that again in a hurry! ;)

CaptainWentworth · 31/05/2013 15:12

We had a pretty bad year last year but I got a bonus related to a job move and passing exams, so we treated me to a nice right hand ring for Christmas! I was keen on a Trinity ring from Cartier but in the flesh I preferred the one with the white gold band in pave diamonds- unfortunately that was a bit over budget so went for the Entrelaces ring in white gold and diamond. I was tempted by the rose gold/ pink sapphire version, but the white gold looks better with my steel watch and platinum engagement/ wedding rings.

Still hoping for the pave trinity as well one day...

Have fun shopping! Ooh must also say the Cartier staff in Bond Street and New Bond Street are lovel- it was such a treat just being in the stores. Was much less impressed with Tiffany.

HappyAsEyeAm · 31/05/2013 15:23

If you would be happy to wear second hand jewellery (I am), then go to the lanes in Brighton. Huge amount of choice, all prices, traditional and modern. You get a lot more bling for your buck. Enjoy shopping!

Carolra · 31/05/2013 16:15

Entrelaces ring is gorgeous Captain - good choice!

HappyAsEyeAm - completely agree with your recommendation for The Lanes, but the OP is in Sydney :(

CaptainWentworth · 31/05/2013 16:58

Thanks Carolra- I'm sitting here admiring it now!

HappyAsEyeAm · 31/05/2013 17:35

Sorry OP, I don't know Sydney so well Smile

louschmoo · 31/05/2013 17:44

I got a 3/4 eternity ring made to my spec by the jeweller who made my engagement ring. We went and looked at the selection they had on display, told them our budget and i then selected the aspects i liked from various rings i saw (eg setting, stone size etc). The jeweller is a friend and they helped us select the best balance of colour, clarity, cut, carat etc for our budget. If there is a reputable independent jeweller near you i'd suggest doing that. You can discuss your preferences, get an idea of prices etc, you get something unique which you know you'll like, and it's fun!

bunnymother · 31/05/2013 20:05

Is the shop Rox still in the Strand Arcade? They have some gorgeous, stylish jewellery. They sell both semi precious and precious stone jewellery, and I think their jeweller has a wonderful eye for design. That would be my first place to look. There are more traditional places ie J Farrer Price (I think that's the name) as well as Cartier, Tiffany et al, as well as that wonderful exxy antique jewellery shop in QVC, Martin something, but Rox is just a little more modern IME.

Once you've seen what you like, and if its too exxy, maybe try Jason Ree as he designed my engagement ring based on my neverending description and was really kind and patient, and was quasi-wholesale back then, cost wise.
