Could someone talk me through the La Roche Posay and Avene skincare please?

Having read about these production S&B, I looked them up on amazon too and now really don't know where to start. There are so many different products that people seem to use every day/ mornings or evenings/ every second day etc. I would really appreciate if anyone could advise which products may be suitable for my skin.

I have been using dermalogica special cleansing gel and skin smoothing cream for years. I don't feel it is working that well for me anymore and fancy a change.

My cheeks are generally fine, maybe slightly tight at times. Forehead is fine too, but getting a few lines and I also get the odd under the surface bump. My nose is quite congested with blackheads. To the sides of my nose, the pores on me cheeks have lately seemed really enlarged and it looks a bit like the skin there is being slightly dragged down.

My chin is my worst area. I get quite alot of under the skin little bumps. Some of these turn into horrid, big, red bumps which take ages to go. It also seems to get congested with some small spots and blackheads.

I am 32 and have just stopped breastfeeding my 5 month old. So I think dehydration due to the bf may have contributed (I do drink lots of water) so hopefully that will improve soon. I also will have had hormonal changes. But I think my skin is quite like the above in general anyway.

I also want to try the acid peels I've read about on here. I had been waiting until I finished bf, but am now thinking that changing all my skincare and adding the peels into the mix might be too much?

Thanks if you've read this far.

I do not know but I am bumping for you, as I would like to know too!

Hi, I'm sure an expert will be along shortly, but I have used a couple of products which I'd recommend.

I use this Avene cleanser, it says for oily/blemish prone skin but I find it great even though my skin isn't oily. It doesn't leave my skin tight or dry and it is a lovely consistency. I was a bit daunted by the other 'no-rinse-required' Avene cleansers so I went for this one and I really like it! Has lasted ages as well.

I also recently bought this spot cream. I used it for a few days and it helped my spots reduce in redness and ...well ...pop more easily...(sorry!). It also seemed to get rid of a couple of tiny spots which were lurking under my skin from 'breaking out'.

The lady who served me in boots also recommended the Duo cream She told me it's a bit of a miracle type product at the mo? It sounds like it might be good for you (refines pores and prevents breakouts).

HTH a bit Smile

Whoops - forgot to mention the La Roche Posay suncream I also have. It's this one. Do not recommend!! It would be ok if you're not wearing any make up over the top, but I found it pilled into little white flakes no matter how long I left it before applying foundation. Will be using it up on neck/arms etc as it is actually a nice consistency to apply - just useless under makeup!

If you go on the Avene website and fill in their skin type questionnaire it will recommend the best products for you and send you some free samples. I found this really helpful.

SunnyUpNorth · 30/05/2013 21:57

Thanks Stoker - I have seen that duo cream mentioned a few times but wasnt sure if it is a moisturiser or just some sort of additional treatment?

I also keep reading about the Avene Triacneal cream I think? But again wasnt sure how it differed from the duo cream.

Thanks Elf - that's helpful, I love a free sample! I shall definitely do that.

Not sure about creams but agree with thestoker that the Avene gel cleanser is lovely. I have unpredictably sensitive skin (I take loads of anti-epilepsy drugs and find they make my skin really sensitive which is a common side effect) but have found it completely tolerable and gentle.

Bexicles · 30/05/2013 22:47

I use the Avene thermal spring water, it's in a can. I just spray then let it dry before putting on night or day cream. It has worked wonders for my skin.

PenelopePipPop · 30/05/2013 22:55

Really Bexicles that looked so mad I put it back on the shelf but maybe I'll give it a go now...

I use this Avene cleanser as I like using water, I don't feel clean otherwise. You massage the gel into dry skin and rinse off - similar to Dermalogica Ultracalming which is probably better but twice the £. I use La Roche Posay Cicaplast as a moisturiser - absolutely love it, it is a miracle cream. Manages to be deeply nourishing without being heavy or greasy, and claims to be antibacterial as well. My combination skin loves it, I buy it by the shed load when it's on Boots 3 for 2.

Amazinggg · 30/05/2013 23:13

I squoosh my toddler with the Avene spray when we're in Boots. He gets annoyed, I find it funny Grin

ggirl · 30/05/2013 23:20

Sounds like you need to exfoliate.
I really recommend using a dermaflannel, thread here
works wonders on my skin

I use la roche micellar stuff for cleansing

Have a look at this video if Lisa Eldridges about french pharmacy products here

QueenBoudicea · 31/05/2013 08:06

I used to use dermalogica active moist and the cleansing gel and several years ago I switched to lrp/ avene
I use the physiological cleansing gel and a startedusing the effaclar range of moisturisers which worked well. Now use the avene light hydrating cream as it has spf 20 whereas the regular lrp moisturisers don't have it included.
I recently tried their lrp micellar solution snd whilst its good I prob wouldn't repurchase.
Hope that helps for a comparison to dermalogica?

'I use the Avene thermal spring water, it's in a can'

Brilliant stuff and lasts aaaaages. I have dry/dehydrated skin - in the evening I do oil cleansing, then a good spray of thermal spring water, then pat olive oil into skin while still soaking wet, it seems to help seal the water in somehow. Then let it dry and put a nice thick layer of Astral over the top. Works a treat and is all cheapo Grin

Ooh more replies, I thought this thread had for lost further down! Thanks all.

Yes ggirl, I have been lazy with exfoliating lately but have been trying to make an effort again. I have the No 7 version of that ultrasonic cleansing brush thing. I didn't really use it as I overused it at first and it made my skin all red but now I am using it every second night.

I also keep dabbling in the OCM, and have seen the thread on the dermaflannel (and cheap microfibres alternative!). But this is the problem with S&B....I want to use all these different products and techniques and wouldn't know which was or wasn't making an impact!

I have quite alot of boots points at the moment and I see the skincare is on 3 for 2 so I might get the soap less cleanser, the water spray and one of the moisturisers.

I will keep up with the cleaning brush and consider the dermaflannel once I have settled into the new skincare regime.

I also still want to try the acid peels!

On a different note....I went on to the Avene website....how amazing would it be to go on their 21 day personalised skin care retreat!!!!! Days and days of facials, bliss.
